The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is hiring a Michigan Medicine Security K9 Officer to join their department in Ann Arbor. Michigan Medicine Security is a full-service, 24‑hour public safety department that works to meet the needs of the Michigan Medicine community. Widely acknowledged as a healthcare security leader in patient and family‑centered care, their officers and support staff are highly trained healthcare security professionals equipped to serve all community members.

They manage all security operations at Michigan Medicine and offer an integrated approach to safety and security.

Michigan Medicine Security K9 Officer Position Opening

DPSS leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between U‑M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters regarding wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

The salary range for a new, probationary Michigan Medicine Security K9 Officer is $43,409.60 – $44,277.79
. Those who have completed a one‑year probationary period are $46,238.40 – $53,747.20 and can be found in the POAM bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure public safety, protect our assets, and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire, and security agencies; act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment.
  • Work with medical staff, de‑escalate potentially violent and non‑violent situations; help maneuver persons who may be combative, intoxicated, or unconscious; restrain individuals as needed.
  • Patrol the medical center and off‑site health system buildings, monitor fire, infant protection, security, and access control alarm systems, and detect safety hazards and criminal elements.
  • Use your customer service skills and inclusive mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community members.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
  • Prepare incident and security reports.
  • Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of the routine patrol.
  • Provide services such as escorts, way finding, unlocks, motorist assistance, well‑being checks, fund transports, property control, and traffic and crowd control.
  • Move equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers.

    Maintain compliance with all Michigan Medicine and DPSS policies to work in tandem with a canine partner to protect hospital property, employees, patients, and visitors.
  • Utilize the canine to perform explosives detection sweeps of Michigan Medicine‑owned, or controlled properties and other University of Michigan properties when authorized by MMS leadership.
  • Abide by infection control policies to schedule and oversee animal‑assisted therapeutic interactions with patients.
  • Participate with the canine in promotional and educational demonstrations as authorized by MMS leadership.
  • Manage friendly interactions between the canine and the hospital community, demonstrating compassion and customer service while performing security functions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
