University of Michigan’s Security Officer SECURITY OFFICER JOB OPENING

The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) seeks to fill several Security Officer positions, who will report to a Security Sergeant! UM-Dearborn DPS is now responsible for the safety and security of Marygrove College, and assignments may include this site. If you are interested or know anyone who might be, apply today!

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters regarding wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

The pay range for new Security Officers is $43,409.60 – $44,277.79
. The full salary range for Security Officers who have completed a one-year probationary period is $46,238.40 – $53,747.20 and can be found in the POAM bargaining agreement.

Position Summary
  • The Division of Public Safety and Security(DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment.

  • Security Officer is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, afternoons, weekends, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position following the DPSS uniformed dress code. Patrol assignments may include both mobile and building-specific responsibilities.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure public safety, protect our assets, and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire, and security agencies; act calmly in emergencies and use emergency equipment.
  • Patrol assigned areas and monitor fire, security, and access control alarm systems.
  • Detect safety hazards and criminal elements.
  • Use your customer service skills and inclusive mindset to communicate and work with all community members respectfully.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
  • Prepare incident and security reports.
  • Ascend and descend multiple flights of stairs as part of the routine patrol.
  • Provide services such as escorts, way finding, unlocks, motorist assists, well-being checks, fund transports, property control, and traffic and crowd control.
  • Move equipment such as barricades and fire extinguishers.

Required Qualifications

  • You must pass a comprehensive public safety background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.
  • High school or GED equivalent + 1 year of experience in a security, fire, military, customer service, or emergency management field.
  • Experience with the enforcement of fire, safety, and security practices.
  • Skill set in handling emergencies and using associated equipment.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and basic keyboarding.
  • A valid driver’s license and a driving record with less than 6 points.

  • All Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) members are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.
