Position: Registered Nurse (RN)

Primary

Purpose:

Provide health services to students in assigned schools. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students and staff. Function as a health advocate and liaison between home, school, and community to ensure the physical, mental, and emotional well‑being of students.

Qualifications:
  • Education/Certification:
    • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program.
    • Valid Registered Nurse license (RN) issued by the Texas Board of Nursing.
    • CPR and First Aid certification (required).
    • Vision, Hearing, and Spinal Screening Certification (preferred).
    • Valid Texas driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Special Knowledge/

    Skills:

    • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
    • Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to implement policies and procedures.
    • Ability to work effectively with children, parents, staff, and community agencies.
    • Knowledge of public health principles and practices as they relate to school health.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of two (2) years of nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics, public health, or community health nursing.

Responsibilities and Duties:


Health Services
  • Provide direct care to students and staff for injuries, illnesses, and chronic health conditions.
  • Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with district policy and physician orders.
  • Manage health records and maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Identify and refer students with health conditions that require medical attention.
  • Provide emergency first aid and coordinate medical emergency procedures on campus.
  • Health Education and Promotion
  • Serve as a health resource for students, staff, and parents.
  • Participate in health education programs and provide classroom presentations on hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.
  • Support district wellness initiatives and health fairs.
  • Compliance and Recordkeeping
  • Conduct state‑mandated screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, etc.) and maintain accurate documentation.
  • Monitor immunization compliance and report data to appropriate state agencies.
  • Prepare and submit required health reports in a timely manner.
  • Collaboration
  • Work collaboratively with campus administrators, counselors, and teachers to address student health concerns that affect learning.
  • Communicate with parents regarding student health needs and referrals.
  • Serve as a liaison between the district and community health agencies.
  • Participate in ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) and 504 meetings as needed.
  • Professional Growth and Conduct
  • Maintain professional nursing licensure and certifications.
  • Participate in professional development to remain current on school health trends and best practices.
  • Comply with all district, state, and federal policies and regulations regarding student health and safety.
  • Emergency Response:
  • Provide first aid and emergency care as needed.
  • Participate in emergency drills and serve on the campus crisis response team.
  • Maintain readiness to respond to medical emergencies at school‑sponsored activities when assigned.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and exposure to bodily fluids.
    • Possible exposure to communicable diseases.
    • Regular interaction with students, staff, and parents.
    Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
    • Maintain emotional control under stress.
    • Ability to work with interruptions and shifting priorities.
    • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds (e.g., assisting students with limited mobility).
    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    May provide guidance to LVNs, health aides, or paraprofessionals assigned to the school health clinic. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with district policy and administrative guidelines.

    Salary: Salary commensurate with experience.
    Position cannot be performed remotely.

    Sheldon ISD will accept applications for this position through 11/25/2025.
