About The Position
The Police Department in the City of Saint Paul is seeking a Communication Equipment Technician - Radio Systems and Network Support
. This position installs, programs, and maintains public-safety communication and electronic equipment for City vehicles and facilities. Work includes electrical installation, radio programming, troubleshooting equipment, and support for communication and network-connected systems. The primary role includes programming, maintaining, and supporting public safety radio systems, outdoor warning siren systems, and network connected equipment. Work includes radio code plug development, RF troubleshooting, firmware management, and support for IP-based communication systems.
Here’s What You Can Expect To Do
- Program and update radio code plugs for portable and mobile radios
- Maintain and troubleshoot RF equipment, control stations, and communication hardware
- Support LAN/WAN-connected devices including door card readers and IP-based communication systems
- Perform firmware updates, testing, and documentation of radio assets
- Maintain and troubleshoot tornado/outdoor warning siren systems, including activation equipment, communication links, and routine testing
- Resolve programming, connectivity, and system performance issues across communication platforms

Information Specific to this Position: This position works a 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. work schedule and is located at the Public Service Garage, 1671 Energy Park Dr, St Paul, MN 55108. Working in the office daily is required.

Position Requirements
Requirements may be met by one of the following options:
- Graduation from an electronic technician program and two years of experience to include wiring electronic devices, working with schematics and diagrams, integrating computer and communication devices, installation of communication equipment, installation of external/internal lighting systems, and designing containers to install equipment.
- Graduation from an automotive technician program and three years of experience to include wiring electronic devices, working with schematics and diagrams, integrating computer and communication devices, installation of communication equipment, installation of external/internal lighting systems, and designing platforms to install equipment.
- Four years of electronic and installation experience to include wiring electronic devices, working with schematics and diagrams, integrating computer and communication devices, installation of communication equipment, installation of external/internal lighting systems, and designing containers to install equipment.
