The Apprentice’s Role

David May Motor Services are looking to take on a mechanic apprentice to join their team in Ivybridge. This is a great opportunity to join a very busy and professional garage.

The apprentice will learn all aspects of the trade from general repairs to full servicing. Tasks will include changing brakes, oil and filter changes, clutch repairs, full engine diagnostics, cylinder head replacement, suspension work plus numerous other jobs. The role will also include shadowing staff on complex repairs and assisting with MOTs.

General Duties Will Include
  • Keeping the garage tidy and clean
  • Maintaining a safe environment for both staff and customers

The successful candidate will need to carry out basic electrical repairs on light vehicles and some minor body repairs.

Working Hours

Working Hours: Full time, 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, five days a week, equates to 40 hours.

Wages

Wages: £8 per hour, on a 40 hour week. Any overtime above 40 hours per week will be paid at the appropriate national minimum wage depending on age.

Holiday

Holiday: 28 days holiday entitlement (including bank holidays) will be paid each year, during the course of your apprenticeship.

Company Overview

We are a small family‑run garage since 1975, carrying out body and mechanical repairs to motor vehicles. We also have a fleet of hire vans and a used car forecourt.

Progression

After completing your Level 2 qualification, you will progress onto a Level 3 apprenticeship and full‑time employment within the company, should you have the required skills and knowledge.

Skills Required

Good attention to detail, ability to follow potentially complex instructions, and strong communication skills are required. Some knowledge or proven experience in the motor trade would be beneficial.

Personal Qualities

Must be pleasant, dedicated to completing your training, and prepared to assist colleagues and the employer with other jobs where required.

Prior Qualifications

GCSE grades A–C or equivalent are desired, but not required.

  • Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Competence
  • Level 2 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT (Level
    1)
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Emergency First Aid
  • Certified Health & Safety Course
  • Internet Safety / Safeguarding

Attendance is required at our training centre for one day per week, and you will have regular visits every six to eight weeks from your designated assessor who will monitor your progress throughout your training.

While at our training centre you will learn the necessary skills and gain experience to help you in your role. Part of your training will be theory‑based, whilst the rest will be practical activities at our workshop facility.
