Job Description

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) in the College of Science and Engineering at Idaho State University (ISU) is seeking applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in energy and power systems engineering to join our dynamic and growing team of engineering educators and researchers.

Applications are invited from candidates with outstanding teaching and research potential in the area of energy systems which may include power engineering, electronics, power system protection, stability, resilience, and power quality aspects for hybrid AC/DC grids with HVDC (High-Voltage Direct Current), DER (Distributed Energy Resources) integrations or other related energy and power systems areas.

In addition to classroom and laboratory teaching, there are opportunities to engage with students through research, capstone projects, and student clubs. The Department offers BS, MS and PhD degree programs that enroll traditional students as well as working professionals from industry.

Candidates with strong experience in outstanding pedagogy and/or pedagogical research, as well as building externally funded research programs, are particularly encouraged to apply. Opportunities will be available to establish research collaboration with industry and government organizations in energy and related areas.

Experience with RTDS and SCADA systems will be a plus. Idaho State University faculty has a long-standing collaborative relationship with Idaho National Laboratory, which provides opportunities for joint research projects and joint faculty appointments.

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant Professor role is the starting point on the academic faculty member career pathway ulty members are full members of the Department and play an active role in democratic processes and governance. Responsibilities of the role include active participation in teaching, research, and service:

1. Teaching (60%):
Participation in teaching programs, including classroom teaching, supervision of students conducting research, and personal interactions with and advising students. A faculty member may decide on specific course content and instructional methodology, recognizing the approved course description, and academic policies approved by the Department, the College, and the University. Teaching assignments are decided in discussion with the Department Chair. Professional Engineer licensure is optional and not required at the time of hire, but preferred for power and energy systems engineering faculty.

2. Research (30%):
Participation in research, including the preparation or performance of creative works and reflective inquiry, and disseminating research results by means appropriate to the discipline. Faculty are highly encouraged to seek funding for research from granting agencies or other sources and as such, the outcome of sustainable research based on external funding is evaluated for performance.

3. Service (10%):
The successful candidate will be actively engaged in service and participate in the collegial responsibilities of Departmental, College, and University governance. This also includes the dissemination of knowledge to the general public by making available the faculty member's knowledge of the discipline.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Ph.D. in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

2. Strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching and the ability to effectively develop, instruct, and engage learners.
