Overview
The Chief Metallurgist provides technical and strategic leadership for the processing facilities. The role supports safe and efficient operation of a complex metallurgical plant and works closely with operations, maintenance, environmental and safety teams. The position focuses on plant performance, continuous improvement, problem solving, and ensuring production targets and forecast expectations are met.
Responsibilities- Lead strategic planning and continuous improvement within the processing department
- Provide technical guidance to operations and maintenance to resolve process and equipment issues
- Set and review operating parameters for each unit operation
- Monitor plant performance and drive optimisation across crushing, grinding, classification, flotation, dewatering and pumping
- Identify opportunities for new technologies and improvement projects
- Support training and development of processing personnel
- Champion a zero incident safety culture and ensure compliance with all safety and environmental standards
- Investigate incidents to root cause and support corrective actions
- Collaborate with environmental and safety teams on compliance, industrial hygiene and inspection findings
- Maximise utilisation of installed equipment and ensure operational excellence
- Respond to deviations from production plans and take corrective action
- Facilitate coordination between operations and leadership to resolve plant issues
- Strong communication skills across operations and maintenance teams
- Project management capability for implementation of improvement initiatives
- Effective time management in a dynamic environment
- Ability to work collaboratively across multiple departments
- Openness to new ideas and change, with ability to guide others through change
- High standard of planning, organisation and work quality
- Commitment to a zero accident culture
- Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Minerals or Chemical Engineering or equivalent
- One to five years of mining or processing experience
- Experience in differential flotation preferred
- Knowledge of metallurgical procedures, ore characteristics and process plant operations
- Understanding of reliability principles preferred
- Strong communication and computer skills
- Experience with process control or data systems preferred
- Familiarity with mining regulatory requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, kneel and work on varied surfaces for extended periods
- Ability to work in environments with temperature variation, equipment movement, noise, dust and fumes
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment
- Ability to lift twenty five pounds safely
