Position Summary:
The Foundation CFO is a key member of the Advancement and Foundation senior leadership team, responsible for providing strategic financial direction and ensuring the integrity of all financial operations. This role oversees budgeting, accounting, investment management, and compliance for a dynamic nonprofit organization that manages donor‑restricted funds and endowments in support of Idaho State University. The CFO will lead a small, high‑performing finance team, maintain strong internal controls, and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting to the CEO and Board of Directors.
This position is a state employee through Idaho State University on loan to the ISU Foundation and reports to the CEO. This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.
- Develop and implement financial strategies aligned with the Foundation's mission and goals.
- Advise the CEO and Board on financial performance, trends, and risk management.
- Collaborate with University administration to support joint initiatives, capital projects, and long‑term planning.
- Lead financial operations that align with best practice and industry standards for non‑profit fundraising and reporting in higher education.
- Oversee all accounting functions, including fund accounting and donor‑restricted funds.
- Direct compliance for gift acceptance, reporting, and counting policies.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, IRS regulations for 501(c)(3) organizations, and audit standards.
- Direct budgeting, forecasting, and cash‑flow planning.
- Monitor investment performance and ensure adherence to the Foundation's investment policy.
- Oversee endowment accounting and reporting to donors and stakeholders.
- Manage vendor relationship with OCIO and ongoing administrative functions.
- Lead annual audit preparation and manage auditor relationships.
- Maintain robust internal controls and segregation of duties.
- Develop and monitor standard operating procedures and process improvement plans.
- Supervise and mentor the Senior Accountant and Accounting Assistant.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Directors and Finance/Investment Committees.
- Support governance and policy development related to financial matters.
- Serve as liaison to Board committees and task forces as assigned.
- Minimum 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, including at least 5 years in a senior management role.
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or another related field from an accredited institution.
- Experience with nonprofit accounting and compliance for 501(c)(3) organizations.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, investment management, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with a proven ability to collaborate across multifaceted teams and stakeholders.
- Significant experience in strategic team oversight, with a documented ability to foster professional growth, manage complex workflows, and drive operational excellence through others.
- CPA designation.
- MBA or advanced degree in finance/accounting.
- Familiarity with university foundations or higher education fundraising organizations.
