Data Center Technician II – Huntsville, AL. Responsible for the installation of various IT hardware devices and cabling in a data center environment. The role requires intermediate knowledge of data center hardware and systems, understanding of space, power, and cooling requirements, and mounting hardware specifications.
Responsibilities- Evaluate Data Center infrastructure requirements (rack space, network, power, cabling, etc.) and coordinate necessary resources to prepare space for equipment installation.
- Coordinate necessary facilities resources such as electric and cooling for specialized equipment including high voltage storage area networks and large servers requiring redundant power.
- Provision cabling, floor cutouts, rack rails and mounting hardware for the installation of IT devices and systems such as servers, switches, routers, power cables, fiber and copper cables, power distribution units, and KVM components.
- Perform end‑to‑end installation of patch cables (fiber and copper) and management/cross‑connect cabling.
- Provide troubleshooting assistance such as rebooting, visual check of system indicator lights, and replacement of suspected failed components in conjunction with systems engineers to enable system return to operation.
- Follow labeling standards and track configuration changes and inventory information in an Excel spreadsheet, SharePoint, or data center information system.
- Adhere to all data center safety rules, policy, and installation standards.
- Perform other duties such as un‑crating and unboxing large gear, removing refuse to keep walkways clear.
- Generate and interpret wiring and cabling diagrams in Visio and CADD; proficiency in Microsoft Office (Project, Excel, Word).
- Monitor data center IT and environmental systems for failures and coordinate with vendors or repair technicians for repairs or replacements.
- Assist the FBI in developing, managing, sustaining, and using a tracking database and scanning gun for hardware inventory control, including warranty status and maintenance agreements.
- Manage stock, store, issue, control, document, sustain, and maintain expendable and non‑expendable parts and tools and cable inventories of FBI and vendor equipment.
- Perform IT and system hardware maintenance and equipment replacement services in response to maintenance requests.
- Maintain data center infrastructure and IT equipment in operating condition per OEM requirements, performing corrective, adaptive, and preventative maintenance tasks as needed.
- Perform copper and fiber communications cable installations and terminations; use test equipment to certify terminations to manufacturer standards.
- Provide timely problem resolution.
- Continuously transition knowledge to Government staff through training and assistance on using technology, author step‑by‑step solutions for Tiers 1 and 2 frequently asked questions and problem resolution references.
- Current Top‑Secret clearance with capability to obtain SCI/CI‑Poly.
- Minimum three years of data center hardware and cable installation experience.
- Knowledge of National Standards for data center IT infrastructure including BICSI Installer 2 (Copper and Fiber), TIA‑606 labeling standard, and TIA‑942 data center requirements.
- Current industry foundational technology certification (e.g., CompTIA Server+, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, Schneider Electric DCCA, EPI CDCE) or vendor‑specific technician level certification (e.g., Cisco Certified Technician, Dell Power Edge Foundations). Higher certification required.
- Lift IT equipment during installation and removal; ability to lift up to 50 pounds for short periods.
- Perform tasks requiring pulling, cabling, kneeling, crawling.
- Use cable termination equipment, test equipment, power tools (Sawzall, drill, crimping tools). Use wrenches, screwdrivers, power tools.
- Operate manual forklifts and data center rack lifts as required.
- Wear safety gear (safety shoes, goggles, hearing protection) while performing tasks.
- An associate degree or vocational degree in Information Technology Systems is preferred.
