The Custodian performs routine custodial, maintenance, and cleaning tasks in an assigned building to maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe environment.

The job requires facility cleaning and maintenance skills and the ability to operate the tools and equipment required to complete the assigned tasks. This is a physically active job performing routine tasks on a regular basis and major project tasks intermittently. The job requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public.

The work environment includes a public building cleaning and maintenance environment. The job requires operating electrically powered cleaning equipment and cleaning substances that may involve related hazards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform cleaning and maintenance in an assigned building:
    • Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors and carpets.
    • Dust and wipe furniture, fixtures, and surfaces.
    • Clean restrooms, hallways, offices, meeting rooms, and other public rooms.
    • Clean interior and exterior glass surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize restroom areas, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, privacy dividers, walls and floors. Maintain supply levels in restrooms.
  • Empty and clean trash containers, transport bagged waste to outside trash receptacles, and separate recyclables.
  • Clean light fixtures, replace bulbs and/or ballasts, polish mirrors, wood, and other special reflective and decorative surfaces.
  • Clean spills, spot clean carpets, and remove graffiti as needed.
  • Maintain custodial equipment.
  • Maintain grounds by picking up litter and trash, mowing and trimming grass and planting areas (depending on building assignments). Perform snow removal duties as needed. Set up for and break down after special events.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair duties including painting, carpentry, and plumbing (depending on building assignment).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Idaho driver’s license may be required, depending on assignment.
  • One (1) year of general maintenance experience is preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of cleaning and maintenance methods for public buildings.
  • Preparation, use, and disposal of chemical cleaning agents.
  • Appropriate use of cleaning agents for varied surface types.
  • Safety procedures when cleaning and moving furniture.
  • Grounds and yard maintenance methods, depending on assignment.
  • City policies regarding safe work practices.
  • Perform routine custodial tasks in an assigned building.
  • Operate and maintain powered custodial equipment (vacuums, strippers, waxer, buffers, shampoo cleaners, extractors, power washers).
  • Operate hand cleaning equipment (brooms, dust and wet mops, dust pans, dusters).
  • Operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs to grounds keeping equipment.
  • Operate hand and power tools.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Communicate effectively in English.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with City policies and procedures.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires operation of job-related equipment and occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds with assistance.

Adequate visual acuity and hearing capacity are required.
