Tool and Die Maker 2

Schedule & Compensation
1st Shift – Monday to Friday – 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
$33+ per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Follow direction of supervisor, lead person and more experienced employees to machine parts for tools.
  • Construct and repair dies, molds, gauges, jigs and other fixtures for production areas across Valmont divisions.
  • Fabricate and/or repair parts and assemblies for maintenance of plant equipment.
  • Fabricate prototype parts for new product development.
  • Read mechanical blueprints and perform trigonometric calculations.
  • Identify trends from press monitoring systems and suggest corrections.
  • Maintain a clean, neat and safe work area, keeping machines and tools clean and in good working order.
  • Participate in continuous improvement teams.
  • Operate a forklift and be certified with Valmont’s forklift training.
  • Demonstrate the company’s core values: passion, integrity, results, continuous improvement.
  • Perform heat treatment of ferrous materials through hardening and surface hardening.
  • Design, construct and troubleshoot dies, fixtures, tooling and mechanical components.
  • Perform dimensional precision measurement and tolerancing.
  • Create and update AutoCAD drawings and Fusion models.
  • Use advanced shop math including geometry and trigonometry.
  • Operate manual lathes, mills, drills and grinders, and program and operate CNC mills and lathes.
  • Weld mild steel with wire feed or stick.
  • Use computer programs (AutoCAD, Fusion, email, labor reporting, safety, training).
  • Work over ten hours a week, including weekends and overtime when required.
  • Safely operate and drive a forklift and use material handling equipment such as hydraulic lifts, jib and bridge cranes.
  • Receive, inspect, clean and stock steel, nonferrous metals, phenolics, plastics and other raw materials.
  • Communicate effectively in written and spoken words.
  • Report to GEMS and mentor less‑skilled Tool and Die employees.
  • Travel up to 1% domestically, including overnight stays.
Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree and 3+ years related work experience OR 7+ years related work experience.
  • Successfully complete Toolmaker and Machinist tests and hands‑on tests.
  • 3 years experience reading and interpreting blueprints or process sheets.
  • Experience with heat treatments of ferrous material through hardening and surface hardening.
  • Construction and troubleshooting of dies, fixtures, tooling and mechanical components.
  • Fundamentals of dimensional precision measurement and tolerancing using micrometers, calipers, indicators, thread gauges.
  • Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer.
  • Advanced shop math including geometry and trigonometry.
  • Proficient operation of manual lathes, mills, drills and grinders; program and operate CNC mills and lathes.
  • Demonstrated metal cutting and machine tool operation.
  • Welding mild steel with wire feed or stick.
  • Safely lift up to 25 pounds frequently.
  • Stand 90% of shift; bend, pivot or squat 10% of shift.
  • Microsoft Outlook and general computer proficiency.
  • Willingness to work overtime and weekends.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Participation in safety and lean programs.
  • Safe operation of jib, monorail and bridge cranes.
  • Valid forklift operation and driving certification.
  • Acceptable attendance, safety and performance history.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree in Machine Tool Technology or Tool and Die.
  • One or more years of prior experience with Computer Aided Drafting.
  • One or more years of prior welding experience.
  • One year of prior forklift operation experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Outlook.
  • Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer.
  • Experience with heat treatments and die construction.
Physical Effort

Stand most of the shift; bend and squat ~10% of shift. Move fixtures up to 50 pounds, average lift 25 pounds. Change lathe chucks and secure raw material weighing from 30 pounds to several thousand pounds using lifting devices. Use fine motor skills for measuring tools and machine interfaces. Operate ladders or hoists when required.

Working Conditions
