Job Description

Idaho State University operates the Environmental Monitoring Program (EMP) to support independent radiological monitoring of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) site and environs by a state institution and to offer educational opportunities for students. Students learn environmental research techniques, analytical skills, and the regulatory aspects of monitoring. The EMP contracts with the INL Oversight Program to analyze environmental samples and to conduct applied research and other activities in support of environmental surveillance.

The EMP analyses are performed in the Environmental Monitoring Laboratory (EML) by personnel located on the ISU campus in Pocatello, Idaho.

We seek a motivated individual to work independently under supervision of senior scientist at the Environmental Monitoring Laboratory in Pocatello, Idaho. This individual will need to have demonstrated by performance in advanced STEM course or work experience that they have the intellectual acumen to understand, operate, and advance at a level commensurate with the experience and training provided in what is a substantial integrated radio-analytical laboratory.

They, with experience and the knowledge gained, will be able to establish an operational understanding, and basic maintenance and repair skills applicable to every type of radiation detection and laboratory equipment commonly used in radio-analytical labs. This role involves handling radioactive materials and preparing them for analysis via various techniques like gamma spectrometry, gas flow proportion counting and liquid scintillation analysis.

Applicants should have basic understanding of radioactivity and hazards they may possess.

This position is not eligible for new visa sponsorship at this time. Candidates who already hold valid U.S. work authorization may be considered.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead or contribute to sample preparation and analysis
  • Involvement in organizational assessment, operational analysis, or performance optimization.
  • Engage in enrichment activities including workshops and networking.
  • Prepare and present findings, reports, and recommendations to support laboratory operations.
  • Other duties, projects, and responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Health Physics, Physics, Chemistry, Nuclear Engineering or related STEM Degree from an accredited institution.
  • This role requires a standard 40-hour workweek, as well as availability to be on call for state, regional, and national emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in radio chemical laboratory.
  • Experience with radiation safety practices.

Salary will be between $49,750 and $52,000 per year, commensurate with education and experience.
