Primary Function
A Security Officer ensures the safety of the area and the patrons they are assigned to. Duties include monitoring events, responding to emergency situations, and recording all incidents on site. Officers protect employees, visitors, and property by observing designated areas, addressing security threats, and maintaining a visible presence.
Security officers do not need formal education beyond a high‑school diploma or equivalent. Many employers require a license; most states require officers to be at least 18, pass a background check, and complete a minimum number of training hours. Requirements vary for unarmed versus armed officers. Successful candidates must be alert, strong communicators, and physically fit.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Assume overall responsibility for the safety and security of designated areas
- Patrol designated areas according to established procedures
- Identify potential security risks and respond accordingly
- Complete incident reports and required documentation for all security incidents
- Ensure all employees and visitors have proper credentials (s and passes) for building access
- Respond to emergencies and incidents promptly following policy
- Assist employees and visitors with concerns
- Escalate emergency situations to law enforcement as needed
- High school diploma or GED required
- At least 18 years old
- Ability to pass a background check
- Valid security guard license in the state of employment
- Previous security‑related work experience preferred
- Ability to remain level‑headed and respond quickly in stressful situations
- Proficient written and oral communication skills
- Comfortable kneeling, carrying, bending, walking, and standing for extended periods
- Capacity for continuous physical exertion as needed
- Working knowledge of basic security techniques
- Standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, and bending frequently required
- Hand/finger dexterity and reach with hands and arms necessary
- Sufficient visual acuity and hearing to perform essential functions and interact with the public
