Job Description
The City of Pocatello is seeking a Construction Laborer for seasonal work in the Parks & Recreation Department. This position involves manual, skilled, and unskilled labor for cleaning, maintenance, and repair of parks, facilities, and public rights‑of‑way. Duties include general construction, maintenance, and repairs to City buildings and infrastructure.
Applicants must be 16 years of age or older. The position requires working knowledge of construction and landscape techniques, cleaning and janitorial methods, safe use of hand and power tools, collaborative working relationships, and safe vehicle operation with an acceptable driving record.
The work environment includes indoor and outdoor conditions, wet or humid environments, dust, odors, mist, gases, or other airborne matter. Employees may be exposed to mechanical hazards and will drive a vehicle as part of the job. Work may occur days, evenings, and weekends as required.
Employment with the City of Pocatello is contingent on passing a background check.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Construction Laborer I (P02) – Performs minor landscaping and construction duties using small hand tools; limited small equipment operation under supervision; cleanup of brush and tree limbs, feeding into chipper; new, first‑season employee with limited experience.
- Construction Laborer II (P03) – Provides assistance with construction of park amenities, including plumbing, pouring and finishing cement, use of small hand and power tools, chain saws, basic carpentry; operates a mini‑excavator and skid steer, loading/unloading from a trailer.
- Construction Laborer III (P04) – Performs tasks with above‑average knowledge and skill, including large equipment operation (backhoe, front‑end loader, non‑CDL dump trucks); pouring and finishing of cement; use of hand and power tools and carpentry; reports job completion status to supervisor; drives City vehicles and trailers; performs loading and transport of large maintenance equipment to parks and construction sites.
Management retains the right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities as necessary.
Acceptable Experience, Training, Licenses, and Certifications- 16 years of age or older
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- 2 to 5 years of experience (may vary by level)
- Specialized certifications, construction and/or supervisory experience may be required
- Idaho driver’s license required
- Stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces
- Hand/finger dexterity to handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms
- Operation of job‑related equipment and driving a vehicle
- Occasionally lift or move up to 100 pounds with assistance
- Require sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity
