Job Description
The Water Department Construction Worker performs construction, repair, and maintenance work on Water Department projects with emphasis on concrete, carpentry and masonry projects. The work is performed under the supervision of the Plumbing Supervisor.

The job requires knowledge of the methods of general carpentry, masonry construction and concrete preparation, framing, forming, pouring, and finishing work on streets and roadways, curb, gutter, sidewalks, and driveways.
The job requires knowledge of the methods of water distribution repair and installation of water mains, services, valves, hydrants, meters and storm/Sewer related infrastructure, operations of power tools and light and medium equipment such as dump trucks with trailers, backhoes, compactors, power brooms, snow plowing equipment and loaders. The job requires Class I Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification.*
The job requires the ability to maintain a collaborative and cooperative working relationship with elected and appointed officials, other City employees, other organizations, and the general public.
The work environment is a public street environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions, trench excavations, scaffolding, traffic hazards, moving vehicles and heavy equipment at the job site, and hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment. The noise level is generally moderate but with occasional exposure to noisy and/or loud equipment.
The job is an on-call position, responding to emergency situations. Employees designated as immediate response personnel must live thirty (30) minutes or less from their usual daily work site.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities- Performs concrete site preparation, forming, pouring, and finishing work on streets and roadways, curb, gutter, sidewalks, and driveways.
- Constructs and repairs concrete and masonry meter vaults and other structures as part of Water Distribution projects.
- Performs asphalt site preparation, laying, and finishing work on streets and roadways. Patches utility cuts in pavement.
- Assists plumbers in performing installation, maintenance and repair work on City water lines, service lines, hydrants and valves. Installs water meters, performs live main line taps, flushes lines and fire hydrants. Backfill, compact and patch utility cuts in pavement. Transports gravel, sand, asphalt or other backfill material used to repair utility cuts and stockpile sites. Performs snow and ice removal using equipment to plow, sand, and de-ice on City streets and sidewalks.
May be assigned to assist with pulling pumps and cleaning water storage tanks. Assists in training other employees on operating equipment and trains to operate all equipment used by the Department. - Performs general maintenance, construction, and repair on Water Department buildings and grounds.
- Operates equipment in the Department inventory including, but not limited to, excavators, backhoes, loaders, dump trucks, compactors, and rollers.
- Maintains, services and repairs equipment and tools.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.

- High school diploma or GED; and
- Flagging certification;
- CPR and First Aid certification;
- Class A CDL with specified endorsements*;
- Class I Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification*;
- Two or more years of masonry and concrete experience is preferred.

Note:
The Construction Worker position requires a Class A CDL with endorsements within six (6) months of hire date; and a Class I Drinking Water Distribution Operator certification within eighteen (18) months of hire. Failure to acquire this certification by the established date will violate the terms of the position and will result in layoff from the position.
