Sanitation Operator

Sanitation Operator operates Sanitation Department collection equipment on a fixed route, collecting refuse in a timely and safe manner. The operator holds required certifications and has the skill and knowledge to operate the following collection trucks: commercial, residential, roll‑off, and cart removal. The operator is proficient in fixed routes and operations as assigned. The role requires collaboration with elected officials, other city employees, third parties, and the public.

The work environment is a public street environment that may include exposure to adverse weather conditions, traffic hazards, and moving vehicles. Noise is generally moderate with occasional exposure to loud equipment. The position requires rotating weekends and holidays as needed.

• Operate a commercial collection or residential truck on fixed routes.
• Operate a cart retrieval truck on a fixed route; load and unload roll‑off boxes and compactors as required.
• Collect refuse on a fixed route in a timely and safe manner; empty refuse containers and pick up items left at curbside as needed.
• Respond to special pickup requests from customers and make route adjustments to accommodate weather, road construction or closures.
• Perform pre‑ and post‑route inspections of equipment for mechanical problems or damage to ensure safe operation; perform minor maintenance on equipment, checking fuel, fluid levels, tire condition, air pressure, greasing, and washing and cleaning interior and exterior.
• Maintain and update route information books, software and related records and logs; analyze data from routing software.
• Clean, deliver, and pick up refuse and recycling containers.
• Provide essential services by accessing the landfill after regular open hours.
• Perform right‑of‑way maintenance as needed.
• Perform all duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
• Perform other duties as assigned; management may reassign duties or responsibilities at any time.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Class B CDL with airbrake endorsement.
• Idaho STAR card required within six (6) months of hire date.
• Knowledge of refuse‑collection methods, truck operation on fixed routes, basic equipment maintenance, city streets and traffic patterns, and federal regulations and city policies regarding safe work practices.
• Ability to operate a personal computer and job‑related software applications.
• Ability to operate commercial, residential, cart retrieval, and roll‑off collection trucks on fixed routes and as assigned; collect refuse in a timely and safe manner.
• Ability to train on all department equipment, perform basic vehicle and equipment maintenance, make independent decisions on route alterations, container placements, and related decisions.
• Ability to operate a two‑way radio, hand tools, and power tools.
• Ability to maintain a professional demeanor at all times and communicate effectively in English.
• Ability to complete assignments in a timely fashion and understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations.
• Ability to analyze data from routing software and provide excellent customer service while maintaining route efficiency.
• Commitment to safety—perform duties in accordance with City policies and procedures and regard for personal and public safety.

Failure to obtain the Idaho STAR card within six (6) months of hire date will result in layoff from the position.
