THE DEPARTMENT:

Collections, Acquisitions, and Resource Discovery Services (CARDS) is the backstage hub of the University Library responsible for the acquisition, access, maintenance, preservation, and discoverabilityof all the Library's print and electronic collections in support ofthe campus community's information, teaching, and research needs.

The CARDS Unit comprises of three distinguishable subunits:

Electronic Resources Management;
Acquisitions and Materials; and Metadata Management. Collectively, the CARDS Unit engages in the following responsibilities:
Catalog maintenance; bibliographicdescription; subject analysis; collection management and development; purchasing, receiving, processing, reviewing,troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and researching physical and electronic materials in all formats; donation processing;statistics gathering, reporting, analysis, and visualization. TheCARDS unit also houses the Repair, Processing, and Items Restoration Lab (REPAIR Lab), the Library's Signature Polytechnic Experience (PolyX) program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Using thorough knowledge of and ability to interpret technical services policies and procedures, incumbent will: assist in CARDStasks according to changing workflows and departmental priorities with emphasis on Acquisitions and Materials (A&M) subunit tasks including physical receiving, repair, and processing; physical inventory and maintenance; and other Acquisitions and Materialsprojects; may also assist with copy cataloging. Incumbent maintainsparticular focus on the Carleton

    F. Burke Memorial Collection.
  • Working under the general direction and guidance of the Acquisitions, Materials Management, and Student Coordinator andHead of CARDS, handle assessment and evaluation of condition ofdonated and purchased materials; create customized damageremediation task lists; and work in the Repair, Processing, and Items Restoration Lab (REPAIR Lab) to perform all variations ofmonographic, multimedia, and physical serials/periodicals resourcesrepair and end-processing tasks, including assorted label creationor modification and printing, barcoding, and applying appropriatesecurity and property identifiers.
  • Using thorough knowledge of CARDS policies and procedures andstrong written and verbal communication skills, work closely withthe Acquisitions, Materials Management, and Student Coordinator andHead of CARDS to draft operational procedures as needed related to physical materials receiving, processing, damage remediation, andrepair; recommend and train students and staff in best practices toensure quality control of all aspects of physical materialworkflows with particular focus on the Carleton

    F. Burke Memorial Collection. May be responsible for coordinating work of student assistants assigned to REPAIR Lab and the Carleton

  • Using thorough knowledge of CARDS policies and procedures, uponreceiving library physical materials, verify accuracy of materials in-hand against bibliographic and holdings records; troubleshootitem record inconsistencies; perform duplicate or overlap titlechecks prior to accession to assist with and participate in catalogcleanup and collection maintenance of physical monographs, serialsand periodicals.
  • Using working knowledge of library collection and classification schemes, perform copy cataloging for physicalmonographs, serials, and periodicals bibliographic records importedinto Alma and the Library's catalog. Assist with managing physicalmonographs and serials/periodicals including creating, editing,maintaining, and updating holding records in OCLC.
  • Using expertise in most aspects of the library's catalogsystems, troubleshoot and problem-solve issues related tobibliographic records, control, and access in consultation with the Acquisitions, Materials Management, and Student Coordinator,Resource Management Coordinator, and Head of CARDS.
  • Assist with short- and long-term projects for physicalmaterials, in particular those involving collection maintenance andlibrary display management of the Carleton

    F. Burke Memorial Collection.
  • Using thorough knowledge of CARDS policies and procedures,resolve physical materials-related problems that arise. Report problems to the Acquisitions, Materials Management, and Student Coordinator and collaborate on resolution as needed.
