The Addiction Medicine Physician (AMP) part-time, 20 hours a week, oversees the management of withdrawal symptoms and the initiation, ongoing treatment, and support of Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for clients with alcohol and drug use disorders. The AMP handles tasks such as taking medical histories, conducting physical exams, utilizing screening tools, ordering and interpreting lab tests, and diagnosing and treating common medical conditions.

Additionally, the AMP works closely with the Intake Department to ensure the safe admission of patients into detoxification and residential treatment programs for substance use disorders.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Assessment and Diagnosis

  • Assess drug and alcohol use and determine the level of severity using screening tools and current DSM criteria.
  • Analyze and interpret patient history, symptoms, physical findings, and/or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries related to addiction use disorder, such as HIV PrEP, Hep C treatment, and other incidental medical services.

Patient Care and Coordination

  • Take medical histories, perform physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests, and diagnose and treat common illnesses and injuries.
  • Provide oversight for Advanced Practice Providers, including entering into a Collaborative Agreement with them, providing supervision, participating in clinical review, performance appraisal, peer review, and hiring and termination of Physicians and clinical support staff.
  • Collaborate with behavioral health teams.
  • Consult with the SoCal Director of Addiction Medicine for treatment or referral options.

Treatment and Management

  • Determine medication withdrawal management for patients detoxing from drugs and alcohol to prevent withdrawal complications.
  • Determine the appropriate level of treatment based on current drug and alcohol use.
  • Prescribe various Medication Assisted Treatments to reduce harm and prevent complications from drug and alcohol use.
  • Educate and prescribe opioid reversal agents such as naloxone to patients to reduce harm from drug use.
  • Educate, support, and care for patients receiving medication-assisted treatment in continuity and maintenance.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Maintain complete and detailed records of patients' history, assessment, and health care plans.
  • Oversee medication room management, including performing routine audits to ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and reporting findings back to the SoCal Director of Addiction Medicine regularly.

People Management

  • Interview, select, hire, and terminate employees in collaboration with Human Resources.
  • Manage assigned staff such as Advanced Practice Providers, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Interns, Volunteers, and other assigned personnel.
  • Ensure that all assigned personnel are in compliance with Health

    RIGHT 360’s policies, procedures, position expectations, performance goals, and contractual requirements.
  • Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, support, and conduct formal performance evaluations in a timely manner.
  • Identify direct reports’ strengths and weaknesses and strive to develop each team member to their fullest potential.
  • Deliver and arrange training and resources to ensure that direct reports are successful in their roles and to ensure that the medical behavioral health team is in compliance with all standard and regulatory requirements.
