Join the Clean Energy Revolution as a Design Contractor Planning Senior Specialist at Southern California Edison (SCE) and help build a better tomorrow. In this role you will work closely with Design Contractors to oversee the development of complex electrical designs that meet SCE standards, regulatory requirements, and project objectives while navigating technical and operational challenges.
Responsibilities- Conduct long‑term grid import planning analyses and transmission interconnection assessments and projects.
- Manage large design projects from inception to construction completion, ensuring compliance with policies, procedures, rates, deadlines, and electrical design standards.
- Support the company’s electrical distribution system by developing plans, identifying resources, and providing cost estimates and options for distribution facility construction.
- Make decisions that directly impact project scope, timing, and budget.
- Perform field inspections to gather data relevant to the planning and development review process and verify compliance with approved plans.
- Assess the capabilities of the regional distribution system and its compliance with planning criteria.
- Conduct power‑flow studies, build power‑flow models, and prepare economic analyses to develop short‑ and long‑term distribution system plans.
- Ensure the distribution system meets reliability targets and analyze outages for cause, trends, and duration.
- Coordinate activities with internal personnel and/or organizations to ensure compliance and follow‑through on policies, procedures, and completion dates.
- Stay current with industry practices, standards, and customer needs, interacting with a diverse customer base to meet electrical design needs.
- Provide training and support, assessing and managing workload when necessary.
- Protect physical, financial, and cybersecurity assets and handle highly sensitive information with the highest standards of conduct and integrity.
- Three or more years of experience in Electrical Utility Distribution/Transmission/Telecommunication Design, Line Construction, or Engineering discipline.
- Valid Class C Driver’s License.
- Proven ability to apply engineering principles, construction standards, and industry practices.
- Experience determining scope of work, service methods, and OH/UG construction methods.
- Proficiency with wind/pole loading applications, drafting systems, GIS, or related design systems (e.g., SPIDA Calc, Autodesk AUD, cGIS, SAP).
- Experience preparing work orders, construction plans, or project packages.
- Ability to manage multiple technical or customer projects under shifting priorities.
- Collaboration skills across client, peer, management, and agency teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Leadership or mentorship experience.
- Proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Experience managing customer or stakeholder interactions in a technical, construction, or utility environment.
- Experience coordinating design activities for infrastructure replacement programs (e.g., UPC circuits, capacitors, cable replacements).
- Responsible for peer work order review.
- Work mode is hybrid; employees will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely.
- Employees are required to work and reside in the state of California unless otherwise noted.
- Primary work location is Pomona (TSD); the successful candidate may also be asked to work at alternate locations.
- Position requires up to 15% travel and field work throughout the SCE service territory.
- Position offers a 9/80 alternate work schedule or a standard 40‑hour/5‑day week.
- Relocation does not apply to this position.
- Testing may be required for shortlisted candidates; information provided for EEI TECH (Test #5107).
