Overview
The City of Pomona invites qualified candidates to apply for the Stormwater Maintenance Crew Leader position in the Water Resources Department. This key role leads, oversees, and participates in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of the City’s stormwater infrastructure, including catch basins, channels, culverts, storm drains, and detention/retention facilities. The Crew Leader guides field staff in performing debris removal, pollutant capture, facility cleaning, and preventive maintenance;
supports stormwater compliance activities; and ensures accurate data collection and entry into the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS). Under direction, the incumbent coordinates daily assignments, performs complex fieldwork, and ensures tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and in alignment with environmental quality standards and regulatory requirements.
The ideal candidate is a knowledgeable and experienced public works professional who excels in field operations, stormwater system maintenance, and environmental compliance. They are a hands‑on leader who can coordinate teams, guide daily assignments, and provide technical direction in the inspection and upkeep of stormwater structures and equipment. With a strong understanding of safety practices, confined space entry procedures, equipment operation, and stormwater regulations, they model accountability and ensure high‑quality work across all tasks.
The ideal Crew Leader communicates clearly, maintains accurate documentation, uses sound judgment in the field, and values teamwork in support of clean waterways and resilient City infrastructure.
This position includes an excellent benefits package featuring a 4/10 work schedule with Fridays off and medical, dental, and vision coverage. The City maintains a competitive compensation structure with a 5% scheduled salary increase on October 1, 2026.
Qualifications- Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. - Experience:
Four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance, repair, and installation of stormwater or similar facilities. - Licenses and
Certifications:
Valid California Driver’s License; valid Recycled Water Site Supervisor Certificate issued by Los Angeles County Sanitation District; valid Confined Space, First Aid, CPR, and Hazwoper certificates (acquired within 12 months).
- Lead, oversee, review, and participate in the work of staff performing maintenance, repair, and installation of City-owned stormwater facilities and manage workflow of an assigned work unit.
- Perform complex work assignments requiring independent judgment and discretion in establishing work plans and completing assignments.
- Provide input for personnel decisions such as performance evaluations, promotions, hiring, and disciplinary actions.
- Inspect, maintain, clean, and repair city catch basins, open channels, storm drains, culverts, and drainage channels to remove pollutants and maintain compliance with NPDES.
- Maintain stormwater lift station sites.
- Locate assets using the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) and ensure the accuracy of location data; note areas and facilities prone to flooding.
- Inspect reclaimed water facilities and appurtenances for compliance; update GIS system as appropriate.
- Assist other Water Resources work crews as assigned; operate light and heavy equipment and a variety of hand and power tools.
- Erect traffic control devices where appropriate and in accordance with the WATCH manual.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, logs, and reports.
- Observe and comply with all City and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.
