SUMMARY
Staff R&D Materials Chemist Engineer provides the opportunity to develop new materials, concepts, and products for orthodontics. The role requires collaboration across R&D, Operations, Quality Assurance, Technical Services, Regulatory Affairs, and Procurement.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Hypothesize and develop materials formulations; define, develop and test new adhesive formulations based on glass/resin composite mixtures.
- Prepare solutions, compounds, and reagents used in chemical laboratory procedures.
- Conduct experiments using appropriate equipment, techniques and protocols, demonstrating ability to independently plan and carry out daily work.
- Use DOE methodologies to execute experimentation; record experimental data, perform calculations, evaluate results, and make recommendations.
- Prepare advanced technical reports and white papers; summarize and communicate complex data to non‑technical audiences.
- Lead medium‑to‑large new technology projects with minimal supervision, owning data and results.
- Mentor junior scientists and engineers.
- Work with R&D, Procurement, and Manufacturing teams to identify, evaluate, and qualify suppliers and raw materials for NPD, establishing instructions, processes, and plans to transition projects from R&D to manufacturing.
- Serve as technical advisor to engineering, manufacturing, QA, and procurement staff on raw material requirements, vendor selection, test protocols, and fabrication processes.
- Develop and update engineering documents such as manufacturing instructions, drawings, tests, and qualification protocols.
- Propose experimental approaches to complex problems; design and carry out experiments with scientific methods from hypothesis to conclusions reporting.
- Conduct scientific literature reviews; identify deficiencies and improve existing procedures.
- Collect and analyze competitor product performance information.
- Provide training to other associates.
- Perform related duties as responsibilities necessitate.
- MS or PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience with a Master’s degree, or 5 years of relevant experience with a PhD.
- Strong experience with statistical analysis (Minitab or similar).
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to adapt to different audiences.
- Strong technical and analytical skills; wet and dry laboratory experience is critical;
Instron or similar experience is a plus. - Estimated overnight travel less than 10%.
- Experience with scientific literature evaluation and reporting.
- Awareness of industry standards and process tests for quality inspections.
- Understanding of good laboratory practices (GLP).
- Proficient in MS Office Suite and statistical methods.
- Orthodontic and/or dental experience.
- Research experience in polymer composites, glasses and photo‑initiators.
- Medical device experience.
- Bonding adhesives/materials experience.
Actual compensation packages take into account a wide range of factors that are unique to each candidate. The disclosed reasonable estimate is $135,000 – $165,000, plus potential annual performance bonus, medical/dental/vision benefits, 401(k) match, and other applicable compensation plans.
