In this critical leadership role, you will guide, train, and support the dispatch professionals who serve as the vital connection between the community and emergency responders. The Police Dispatch Shift Supervisor helps drive operational excellence by ensuring calls for service are handled accurately and efficiently, field personnel receive timely and reliable information, and dispatch operations meet the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and service.

This position requires availability to work assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and other hours necessary to support the Police Department's 24-hour emergency communications operation.

The ideal candidate is an experienced public safety dispatcher and confident leader who remains calm, focused, and decisive in high-pressure situations. They possess strong supervisory, training, and coaching skills and can effectively guide staff while maintaining accountability, consistency, and a positive team environment.

Successful candidates will demonstrate sound judgment, excellent communication and problem-solving abilities, and thorough knowledge of emergency dispatch procedures, radio communications, CAD, CLETS, and other public safety telecommunications systems. Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may qualify. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

• High school diploma supplemented by specialized training in emergency management and telecommunications operations.
• Four years of emergency dispatch experience including two years of lead or supervisory experience.

License or Certificate:

• Possession of POST Dispatcher certification.

Lead, plan, and review the work of staff responsible for providing emergency dispatch services. Estimate time and supplies required; requisition materials as required; ensure equipment is working properly. Train assigned employees including in the areas of work methods, techniques, and the use and operation of equipment. Verify work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.

Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures. Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Perform the full range of duties in the assigned area of work. Receive requests for police, fire, or other emergency services over the phone; answer 911, alternate emergency, and business calls.

Screen incoming calls to determine necessity, priority, and type of response required. Monitor other agency radio frequencies to be aware of incidents elsewhere that may affect operations. Dispatch units in response to calls for service; monitor all activities on the radio keeping constant communications with personnel in the field; relay information and instructions to field personnel. Maintain accurate log of incoming service requests and action taken;
