Compensation

The starting salary is $65,149 annually, including emt pay.  Upon completion of the city of pompano beach's paramedic training program, salary increases to $71,237.

* salary range (with emt pay): $65,149 - $99,152 annually

* salary range (with paramedic pay): $71,237 - $108,418 annually

* educational incentive pay (as required by the state) :

* additional pay for completing an associate's degree and a bachelor's degree.

* merit increases:

* eligible for 4% annual merit increases

* continue until reaching the maximum of the pay grade

Overview

The sixth-largest city in metropolitan broward county, pompano beach has a regular population of about 121,000; seasonal residents are estimated to increase the population to 150,000. The pompano beach fire/rescue department, which achieved the prestigious distinctions as an iso class 1 fire department, cfai accreditation, and caas accreditation, offers its residents a full complement of firefighting and emergency medical services, including ambulance service.

The department's 250+ employees (200+ combat personnel) are assigned to seven stations throughout the city. Firefighters work a 24-hour shift with one shift on duty and two consecutive days off duty. Specialty units include a fire prevention bureau and a training unit. The department also has an ocean rescue division.

* responds to alarms for services as part of a crew involved in the control and extinguishing of fires, by selecting a hose nozzle depending upon the type of fire and directing streams of water or chemicals onto the fire.

* positions and climbs a ladder to gain access to upper levels of buildings or creates openings in buildings for ventilation and/or entrance using a wide range of hand or power tools.

* assists in maintaining assigned apparatus and maintains personal gear to ensure operational readiness and personal protection.

* attends roll call to receive assignments and current information.

* cleans the fire station and the surrounding area to maintain a sanitary station free from operational impediments and to preserve the life of the equipment.

* participates in driver and apparatus operations training to transport personnel and equipment safely and quickly, and to facilitate the use of equipment.

* performs general maintenance, testing, and repair of fire/rescue equipment to ensure operational readiness and to prolong the life of the equipment.

* performs salvage and cleanup operations at fire scenes.

* performs basic lifesaving procedures at fire and rescue scenes.

* responds to sick person calls and provides emergency treatment.

* staffs rescue vehicles providing emergency transport to the hospital.

* performs assigned duties in maintaining apparatus, quarters, buildings, equipment, grounds, and hydrants.

* participates in drills, demonstrations, and courses in hydraulics, pump operation, maintenance, and firefighting techniques.

* performs related work as required.

* at least 18 years of age

* high school diploma or equivalent

* florida certified firefighter

* florida certified emt or florida certified paramedic

* valid florida driver's license with acceptable driving record.

* have not accrued 12 points within 36 months or 18 points within 48 months

* have not been convicted of alcohol/drug-related offenses within 36 months

* have not been convicted of two alcohol/drug-related offenses within 10 years

* have not had a suspension, revocation, or restriction due to moving violations or alcohol/drug-related problems, including failure to take a breath test within 36 months prior.

* florida approved 16-hour emergency vehicle operator's course (evoc) certificate of completion.

* vision must be no worse than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye; must be correctable to no worse than 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other eye.

* no defect or abnormality of hearing

* must be a non-user of tobacco products for at least one year immediately preceding application (fl statutes, section 633.412(6))

* good character and reputation
