Job Description

SUMMARY: Responsible for planning instruction and/or adapting the education program to enable students to benefit from educational experiences. This position is exempt from Fair Labor Standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitors students’ general health.
  • Monitors student progress toward IEP goals.
  • Plans curriculum, lessons, and teaching methods.
  • Instructs individual and groups in special and general education skill areas.
  • Facilitates and coordinates students in general education classes.
  • Assists individual students with self-care and daily living skills.
  • Monitors student behavior in areas outside of the classroom, during lunch, recess, bus time, general education classes, and school assemblies.
  • Evaluates student progress based on work samples and observation.
  • Meets district and site professional development requirements.
  • Maintains contact with parents and/or students via phone or written communications.
  • Prepares report cards, educational records, IEP forms, classroom observation records, and other forms.
  • Maintains the physical environment of the classroom for organization and presentation purposes and, in general, maintains a neat and orderly room appearance.
  • Completes all required special education paperwork in a timely manner to meet compliance deadlines.

Qualifications
  • Education and/or

    Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Teaching certificate with appropriate special education endorsement.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry; ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

    Skills and Abilities:

    Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community; ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
  • Physical Demands: Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently required to stand, walk, and sit; occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds; specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, and peripheral vision.
  • Work Environment: Noise level usually moderate to loud; frequently required to interact with the public and other staff; directly responsible for the safety, well being and work output of students; exposed to infection and blood borne pathogens at a greater risk than the average person.
