Traffic Engineering - SIGN SHOP TECHNICIAN

Definition

To perform skilled technical and production work related to the design, fabrication and maintenance of traffic control signs, decals, banners and related traffic control materials for the Traffic Engineering Division; to maintain production records and inventory systems; and to perform related technical and operational duties relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Employees in this classification exercise independent judgment in sign production methods, material selection, equipment operation and inventory coordination. Employees are expected to adhere to all City policies, procedures, safety standards and operational guidelines and serve as a role model in their application.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification performs specialized sign fabrication, graphics production and traffic control support duties within the Traffic Engineering Division. Employees at this level are responsible for producing traffic control signs, street name markers, decals, banners and related materials utilizing specialized graphics software, vinyl-cutting equipment and wide-format printing systems. Employees may also assist with general traffic maintenance and operational activities as assigned.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives supervision from the Traffic Engineering Manager or assigned supervisory staff. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.

Essential Function Statements

Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Design, fabricate and produce traffic control signs, street name markers, banners, decals and vehicle markings utilizing sign production software and specialized equipment.
  • Operate and maintain vinyl-cutting plotters, wide-format printers and related sign production equipment.
  • Create sign layouts, patterns and graphics utilizing Sign Lab, Traffic Cad, Corel Draw, AutoCAD and related software applications.
  • Maintain sign inventories, production records, annual replacement listings and related operational spreadsheets.
  • Maintain records of materials, labor hours, production methods and costs associated with sign fabrication and production activities.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning on sign production equipment to ensure proper operational performance.
  • Maintain inventory levels of aluminum sign blanks, sign sheeting, vinyl, decals and related production materials.
  • Assist with installation, replacement and maintenance of traffic control signs and related traffic control devices.
  • Assist with general traffic maintenance and operational support activities as assigned.
  • Operate assigned tools, equipment and vehicles safely and effectively.
  • Maintain assigned tools, equipment, vehicles and work areas in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
  • Adhere to established safety procedures, operational standards and traffic control requirements.
  • Maintain acceptable attendance and the ability to work effectively with others.
  • Any specific requirements stated in the “offer of employment letter.”
  • Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications

Principles, Practices and Knowledge of:

  • Traffic control sign fabrication and maintenance practices.
  • Graphics software, sign production equipment and materials used in production of signs, banners and decals.
  • Operational characteristics of vinyl-cutting plotters, printers and related production equipment.
  • Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards and traffic control principles preferred.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices related to traffic maintenance and sign production operations.
  • Inventory procedures, recordkeeping methods and spreadsheet applications.
  • Basic traffic maintenance and operational support practices.

Operational Skills and

Core Competencies:

  • Operate sign production equipment and related tools safely and effectively.
  • Create sign layouts and graphics utilizing specialized software applications.
