PARK MAINTENANCE WORKER I – PARK MAINTENANCE

DEFINITIONTo perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the construction, maintenance and related service activities related to the Parks and Recreation Department.
PARKS MAINTENANCE WORKER IThis is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series. This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the series. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives immediate supervision from supervisory or management staff, or higher-level maintenance staff.
ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTSEssential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Preform general maintenance in parks.
- Operate pneumatic and hand tools; operate light equipment and trucks; clean and maintain equipment.
- Compile and mix materials to be used on job assigned.
- Maintain records and log of all work performed.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment.
- Must have acceptable attendance and the ability to work well with people.
- Safety for oneself and others is a primary responsibility of every employee.
- Mow grass; plant shrubs, trees, and flowers; trim hedges, trees, shrubs and flowers; cut grass; lay sod.
- Perform a wide variety of carpentry duties, including painting, welding arc and gas, finishing cement, building and installing cabinets, plaster, and drywalls; perform masonry duties as required.
- Maintain Park facilities including tennis courts, athletic fields, playground equipment, and swimming pool.
- Spray herbicides, pesticides and fertilizers.
- Pick up trash and debris from park grounds.
- Respond to public inquires in a courteous manner.
- Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
- Equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
- Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
- Learn methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance and repair related to the area of work assigned.
- Learn to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
- Learn to operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
- Perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
- Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:
- Walking, standing, bending, kneeling or crouching for extended periods of time
- Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
- Making observations
- Communicating with others
- Operating assigned equipment and vehicles.
- Knowledge of general lawn care and maintenance is desirable.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and must obtain a Class B CDL within one year
- Possession of a Forklift Certification within two years
- Possession of an Ariel Lift Certification within two years
- Possession of a Service Tech Applicator Certificate within two years
- Possession of First Aid/AED/CPR Certification within two years
Travel from site to site; field environment; exposure to noise, mud, water, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy construction equipment.
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS- Essential and marginal functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for extensive standing, walking, bending, kneeling, twisting, squatting, climbing, or crouching for prolonged periods of time.

- Operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
