Hourly Pay Ranges:
- Mechanic I:$17.00 – $20.00/hour
- Mechanic II:$21.00 – $24.00/hour
- Mechanic III:$25.00 – $28.00/hour
JOB SUMMARY
The City of Ponca City is accepting applications for Mechanic I, II, or III, depending on qualifications. This position performs preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and mechanical repairs on City-owned vehicles and equipment ranging from light-duty units to heavy-duty equipment. Work is performed under the supervision of the Mechanic Supervisor and Motor Pool Superintendent. Placement level will be based on experience, certifications, and demonstrated skill.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Mechanic I (Entry-Level)
- Perform basic preventative maintenance (fluid checks, lubrication, filter changes, safety inspections).
- Conduct minor repairs (lighting, batteries, tires, driveline components, light-duty brake work).
- Assist higher-level mechanics with repairs.
- Maintain shop cleanliness and follow all safety procedures.
Mechanic II (Intermediate-Level)
- Perform maintenance and repairs on light-, medium-, and heavy-duty equipment.
- Diagnose and repair engines, hydraulic systems, suspension, cooling systems, A/C, and brake systems (including air brakes).
- Use diagnostic scan tools and interpret diagrams and schematics.
- Perform component replacement, external engine repairs, and troubleshooting.
Mechanic III (Advanced-Level)
- Perform advanced diagnostics on automotive, medium-duty, and heavy-duty equipment.
- Conduct major repairs and overhauls on engine, hydraulic, electrical, suspension, and air brake systems.
- Diagnose and repair aftertreatment systems (DEF, DPF, EGR, sensors).
- Perform welding and fabrication as needed.
- Provide technical guidance to lower-level mechanics.
QUALIFICATIONS
Mechanic I
- Experience: 1 year related automotive or equipment maintenance experience/training.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Licenses: Valid Oklahoma Driver's License; must obtain Class B CDL within 12 months of hire.
Mechanic II
- Experience: 4 years mechanical repair experience OR combination of technical schooling and hands-on experience.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Licenses/Certifications: CDL and 609 A/C Certification required on date of hire.
Mechanic III
- Experience: 7 years advanced mechanical repair experience OR advanced technical schooling with practical experience.
- Education: High School Diploma or GED.
- Licenses/Certifications: CDL, 609 A/C Certification, and Air Brake Certification required on date of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Work performed in shop, garage, or outdoor environments with exposure to noise, chemicals, fumes, grease, and extreme temperatures.
- Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs.
