Job Summary

The primary purpose of your job position is to provide direct nursing care to the residents and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local standards. Your role will maintain the highest degree of function, self‑care, and independence for residents.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide direct resident care according to established standards of care.
  • Assume charge position, directing the functions of the nursing assistants and ensuring use of the nursing service policies and procedures manuals.
  • Perform routine charting duties in accordance with established charting and documentation policies.
  • Order prescribed medications from the pharmacy and administer them as ordered by the physician following all local, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Identify problems and implement planned changes to improve nursing care on the unit; inform the Director of Nursing of staffing needs and develop work assignments for CNAs.
  • Make rounds with physicians, inform nursing personnel of admissions, discharges, transfers, and condition changes, and make independent decisions concerning nursing care.
  • Participate in the maintenance of infection control and quality assurance programs, ensuring personnel follow established policies.
  • Ensure that medication, medical supplies, and equipment stock levels are maintained and used efficiently.
  • Participate in the development and revision of resident care plans, keeping nursing assistants informed of goals and approaches.
  • Monitor nursing care to assure residents’ rights are adhered to and that personnel are knowledgeable of each resident’s rights.

  • Qualifications
  • Must possess a valid and current R.N. or L.P.N. License in the State of Florida.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.
  • Must possess a current/valid CPR certification.
  • Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to speak the English language in an understandable manner.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear, or use prosthetics that allow adequate function, to meet position requirements.
  • Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to relate to ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, or at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be free of communicable diseases.
  • Experience
  • Previous long‑term care experience is preferred.
  • Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long‑term care.
  • Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non‑professional personnel.
  • Use of Computer for Documentation of Medical Records

    Computerized medical records are maintained on the Electronic Chart System (ECS) for each resident. Staff have access to information through unique assigned access codes. Information in ECS is printed and placed on individual resident records on a regular basis. Printed and electronic records are considered part of the resident record and are maintained confidentially.

    Electronic Signatures

    Each employee using the computer system will have a unique entry code, kept confidential. This code is the equivalent of a written signature and must not be used under another person’s code. Printed or electronic entries display date, time, and the user’s initials. Users must review information before saving and, if necessary, use the Edit process to correct errors. The person dictating and reviewing maintains proper electronic signatures.

    Nurses (Category I) Responsibilities
  • Catharizing residents and handling laboratory specimens of urine, feces, sputum, blood, etc.
  • Giving injections with the potential for accidental needle sticks.
  • Starting and maintaining intravenous infusion lines.
  • Performing various wound care treatments.
  • Handling bodily fluids and performing hygiene care for residents.
  • Emptying and cleaning urinals, bedpans, and drainage receptacles.
  • Inserting, changing, and irrigating catheters, nasal gastric tubes, gastrostomy tubes, irrigating intravenous tubing, and INT‑type needles.
