Our client, a global automotive manufacturer in the Pontiac MI area, is seeking a Buyer to support purchasing efforts across several commodities and raw materials. This role plays a key part in ensuring programs and production needs are supported with on-time supply, strong supplier performance, and competitive total cost.
This opportunity is well-suited for buyers who enjoy working in a fast-paced automotive manufacturing environment, partnering closely with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and program teams while balancing program execution, strategic sourcing, and cost management. Depending on experience, the role may support development programs, production commodities, or a blend of both.
Key Responsibilities- Manage purchasing activities for assigned programs, commodities, components, and/or raw materials from development through production
- Ensure materials are sourced on time, at best total cost, and aligned with program, quality, and supply requirements
- Serve as the primary purchasing interface to program teams for assigned launches and initiatives
- Support new business pursuits and product launches, including sourcing strategy development and execution
- Lead and support supplier negotiations on pricing, contracts, and commercial terms
- Drive cost reduction initiatives through negotiations, VA/VE activities, supplier resourcing, and market analysis
- Monitor and mitigate commodity and supply chain risks, including raw material volatility, tariffs, and capacity constraints
- Develop and support commodity strategies aligned with global market conditions and business objectives
- Build, evaluate, and maintain a capable and competitive global supply base
- Partner cross-functionally with engineering, quality, manufacturing, and program management to meet technical, timing, and cost targets
- Support pre-production and launch builds, ensuring material readiness and uninterrupted supply
- Manage escalations related to delivery, quality, or commercial issues
- Maintain accurate sourcing documentation, procurement records, and supplier performance metrics
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Engineering, or a related field
- 2+yrs of automotive manufacturing experience in a purchasing role
- Experience supporting production and/or new program sourcing in an automotive environment
- Strong negotiation, analytical, and cost-management skills
- Program purchasing or launch experience
- Global sourcing exposure and experience working with international suppliers
- Experience developing or supporting commodity strategies
