Job Description

Basic Purpose

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving welding work in the construction, repair and maintenance of state equipment and facilities.

Typical Functions

The functions performed in this job family will vary by level, unit and organization, but may include the following:

  • Repairs, alters and/or fabricates a large variety of metal tools, equipment, machinery, furnishings, fixtures and structural components by the use of oxygen‑acetylene, heli‑arc and/or electoarc‑welding equipment and techniques; sharpens and tempers tools.
  • Reads and interprets construction or welding blueprints and sketches; makes material and time estimates.
  • Oversees or supervises the work of other maintenance welders, maintenance repair technicians, laborers, or others assigned to the welding shop.
  • Maintains records of shop activities; test drives or operates heavy equipment and light vehicles.
  • Performs field welding on structural grade steel.

Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others.

This is the specialist level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities involving field maintenance welding work on structural grade steel which may include the supervision of other maintenance welders. Responsibilities may also include operating machine tools such as milling machines and metal lathes to mend and fabricate replacement parts.
