What You Will Be Doing
As a Heavy Equipment Field Service Diesel Technician, you will diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform standard mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs on customers’ equipment in the field. Technicians furnish their own tools, operate industry‑associated heavy equipment, and complete all assigned work accurately and timely.
Primary Responsibilities- Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, and locate mechanical deficiencies in heavy equipment diesel engines and components; source and order parts as needed.
- Determine the extent of necessary repairs, including identifying major powertrain overhaul needs, and prepare orders for required services.
- Use diagnostic equipment appropriately.
- Repair or replace all components of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, air conditioning systems, suspension systems, drive trains, electrical systems, steering, braking, material handling, and operator comfort systems.
- Perform welding and brazing; fabricate and modify parts, equipment, miscellaneous structures, and attachments.
- Complete all work orders (including warranty information) and timesheets legibly, accurately, and timely.
- Operate equipment and vehicles with all necessary licenses and certificates.
- Perform all work in accordance with established quality standards and safety procedures.
- Maintain service vehicle inspection records, daily inspections, and driver logs as required by the Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). truck and equipment clean and presentable.
- Photograph equipment when necessary.
- Participate in required safety program and work safely.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by manager.
To be successful in this position you should have a strong mechanical aptitude, knowledge of relevant tools, a strong sense of urgency, a desire to provide superior customer service, and the ability to take direction and work independently.
Education/Experience- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 4+ years of industry experience.
- Knowledge of complex hydraulics, electrical, computer, and mechanical systems; arc and oxygen acetylene welding; test equipment for diagnosing and repairing equipment and electronic components of vehicles.
- Ability to operate a variety of equipment safely to diagnose, adjust, and repair malfunctions; follow oral and written instructions; read and understand operator and repair manuals; work cooperatively with others; work with minimal supervision and keep required records.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical information—schematics, technical manuals, technical drawings, procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Operate equipment and vehicles with all necessary licenses and certificates.
- Skilled in basic computer applications (email, internet).
- Ability to communicate through email (send/receive notes, attachments).
- Ability to read, analyze, and communicate technical information.
- Ability to write service reports that effectively communicate required information in a clear and concise manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customers and coworkers; keep customers updated using the company’s main method of communication.
- Valid, active driver’s license.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
- Clear driver screenings and provide necessary information for a complete DQ file, including:
- Road test administered by company personnel.
- Background check and MVR with fewer than 10 points.
- DOT physical.
- Drug screen.
- Must not be disqualified to drive a CMV under 49 CFR 391.15.
- Coursework from an accredited trade school, college, or university with emphasis in mechanics, hydraulics, and automotive electronics is desirable.
