Description

Transportation dispatchers coordinate the movements of trucks entering terminals. A transit dispatcher contacts drivers and communicates with them through computers, phones, or in person, assigns loads, ensures they leave and arrive on schedule, and is available to answer questions and troubleshoot problems.

Duties and Responsibilities

Include but are not limited to:

  • Keep track of the progress that drivers make during the day.
  • Use a transportation management system to track driver progress.
  • Check drivers’ in-and-out time and transfer these records into the company’s files.
  • Handle any requests or issues brought forward by customers.
  • Process payroll, report accidents, keep driver logs, and communicate with safety.
  • Aid in driver recruitment and retention, manage hours of service for drivers.
  • Work on a schedule that includes night shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • Maintain strong communication skills and give clear instructions to drivers.
  • Work under pressure and multitask.
  • Stay organized and prioritize calls, as dispatchers receive a large number of calls and problems simultaneously.
Position Requirements

Transportation dispatchers need to have at least a high school degree or its equivalent. Most begin as drivers, learning about driving rules and company operations. On-the-job training is usually provided.

Dispatchers must adapt to lengthy and strenuous working hours, generally a 50‑hour week, spending long periods sitting at a desk.
