Community Development - Building Inspector Building Inspector

The City of Poquoson is accepting applications for the position of Building Inspector to join our dedicated Community Development Department. We are seeking an experienced, detail-oriented professional who is committed to public safety, exceptional customer service, and ensuring compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. The Building Inspector performs inspections of residential, commercial, industrial, and miscellaneous structures at various stages of construction, renovation, and occupancy to verify compliance with applicable building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and related codes and local ordinances.

The successful candidate will interpret construction plans, maintain accurate inspection records, explain code requirements to contractors and property owners, and work collaboratively with design professionals, developers, and fellow City staff to facilitate safe and efficient development throughout the community. Full Time Non-Exempt General Definition of Work

Performs intermediate skilled technical work conducting field inspections and reinspection’s of residential, commercial and industrial facilities for compliance with building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical codes, preparing and maintaining files, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Building Official.

Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Essential Functions
  • Performs building inspections for code compliance as requested.
  • Enforces the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), local ordinances, and applicable International Code Council (ICC) codes.
  • Verifies validity of citizen complaints in reference to state and city maintenance codes.
  • Enforces remedies for code violations. Issues correction notices, stop-work orders, notices of violation, and certificates of occupancy as authorized.
  • Investigates complaints involving unsafe structures, unpermitted construction, and code violations.
  • Receives and manages complaints concerning City facilities.
  • Performs maintenance repairs where possible or sub-contract as needed.
  • Coordinates inspections with Planning, Engineering, Fire Marshal, Public Works, Utilities, and other City departments.
  • Participates in pre-construction meetings and project coordination when necessary.
  • Assists with emergency inspections following fires, storms, floods, or structural failures.
  • Participates in required training and departmental staff meetings as needed.
  • Serves as Building Official in his/her absence.
  • Other duties as assigned, requested, required.
