Utilities Worker

General Definition of Work :

Performs skilled trades with the cleaning, maintenance, repair and operations of essential public utility systems including water, wastewater/sanitary sewer system, storm drainage infrastructure and related work as requested or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Utility Foreman.

Qualification Requirements :

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Essential Functions :

• Checks pump stations; maintains pump stations including painting, roofing, cleaning and power washing; works on pumps including replace packing, seals, wear plates, bearings, and drive shafts.
• Cuts grass; assists other departments as requested, clean bar screens, wet wells, trucks, equipment, and shop area.
• Checks and maintains all generators.
• Locates Miss Utility marks.
• Repairs sewer lines, man holes, and trouble shoots mechanical and electrical problems.
• Exercises values and bleeds air tanks; locates sewer laterals.
• Other duties as assigned, requested/required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

:

Thorough knowledge of techniques and equipment pertaining to wastewater; ability to operate SCADA system; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Education and Experience :

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements :

This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires repetitive motions, frequently requires standing, walking, sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to handle or feel and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and lifting;

work requires color perception; verbal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length and operating motor vehicles or equipment; work frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non‑weather), working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to the risk of electrical shock;

work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic). Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Special Requirements :

• Valid commercial driver's license with Class B endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
