Public Works - Equipment Operator II

Overview

Equipment Operator II is responsible for operating a variety of light to medium duty equipment in support of construction and maintenance projects. This role involves safely and efficiently operating equipment, performing routine maintenance, and adhering to all safety regulations. The position supports road maintenance, site logistics, and related activities in the Public Works department.

• Remove bulk trash and landscaping materials.
• Perform and oversee general infrastructure maintenance on streets, street signs, and drainage projects.
• Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Participate in safety and other required training.
• Manage and oversee small crews to complete job assignments and operate smaller to medium sized motorized equipment (e.g., asphalt patching units, farm tractors, small dump trucks).
• Respond to citizen complaints and department requests.
• Other duties as assigned or requested.

• Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  
  General knowledge of the operation, maintenance, capabilities and limitations of equipment; familiarity with safety precautions; knowledge of traffic laws governing equipment operation; skill in operating equipment; ability to understand verbal instructions; ability to detect mechanical issues; ability to perform minor repairs; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Education and Experience:
  
  High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Physical Requirements:
  
  Ability to perform regular exertion and physical tasks typical of heavy equipment operation, with vision and hearing requirements as described in the job posting.

• Virginia Department of Transportation Flagger Certification within three months of hire.
• Valid commercial driver’s license with Class A endorsement, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
• Forklift certification within six months of hire.
