Western Washington University, with over 15,000 students in seven colleges and the graduate school, is nationally recognized for its educational programs, students and faculty. The campus is located in Bellingham, Washington, a coastal community of 90,000 overlooking Bellingham Bay, the San Juan Islands and the North Cascades Mountain range. The Marine and Coastal Science Program (MACS) is an interdisciplinary major at WWU created to help students develop into confident, thoughtful, ethical scientists who are ready to address the growing challenges affecting our marine and coastal environments. The major combines resources and expertise from the Biology Department, the Chemistry Department, the Geology Department, the Department of Environmental Sciences, and the Shannon Point Marine Center, located in Anacortes about an hour away from main campus.

The major is built around a cohort model in which students engage deeply with their peer group while learning about the tools, concepts, and context of marine science. MACS welcomes one cohort of 30 students per year, for a total of 60-90 students in the program at any given time. There are eight core faculty members in the program, numerous affiliate faculty, four additional staff members, and an academic director.

The Marine and Coastal Science Program maintains a vacancy pool of qualified persons interested in temporary teaching positions. In anticipation of possible openings throughout the academic year and summer session, applications are accepted continuously for temporary, non-tenure track teaching positions on a part-time basis with occasional opportunities for temporary, full-term appointments. Positions may become available at any time and are typically filled on a quarterly basis.

This is a non-tenure track position at the rank of Instructor for the duration of each assigned courses and/or labs specified. There is no expectation of continued employment. The Program and the University value teaching and the candidate is expected to be an exemplary teacher; to be current in the discipline; to engage students actively in their own learning, including discussion, writing, and analysis;

and to provide students with feedback on their course work and examinations; and to be available to students through regularly scheduled office hours. The instructor is required to have the students evaluate the course(s) using the standard University evaluation forms and to make those evaluations available to the MACS director, academic director and faculty for annual review.

Masters or PhD in related field, or commensurate experience. Experience teaching university-level courses. Demonstrated ability and commitment to cultivating learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds.

PhD in related field.

Salary - commensurate with experience and qualifications.
