Straits Engineer, Civil Engineer 2 / Civil Engineer 1 (In-Training)

Location:
Olympic Region - Port Angeles, WA. Work hours flexibility may be available and considered. Salary: $4,746.00 - $7,399.00 monthly (includes a general wage increase of 2% effective July 1, 2026). A conditional offer may be made pending completion of the degree within 2 months of the opening date of this posting. Review of applications is ongoing. - Detail‑oriented project work and consultation.
- Manage your own forest road projects from initial scoping to closing out construction.
- Collaborate with regional working partners to develop road and stream‑crossing projects.
- Create and maintain respectful working relationships.
- Provide recommendations for actions on bridges, culverts, and other maintenance needs on forest roads.
- Provide recommendations on corrections to fish barriers.
- Think critically and strategically while meeting project deadlines.
- Participate as part of a dynamic and energetic team.
- Field engineer position with approximately 60% of work performed outdoors, alone, and in remote areas; circa 30% office work; 10% operating a motor vehicle.
- Ability to perform arduous work while traversing steep, rugged terrain under a full spectrum of environmental conditions.
- Travel outside the region for training sessions and wildland fire incidents may be necessary.
- A current, valid driver’s license with at least two years of driving experience; license must not be suspended, revoked, or restricted. A driving record from all states held in the past three years may be requested.
- Civil Engineer 1 (In-Training) – Bachelor’s degree in Forest or Civil Engineering or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience (salary range: $4,746 - $6,384 per month).
- Civil Engineer 2 (CE2) – Bachelor’s degree in Forest or Civil Engineering AND 1 year of professional experience, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience (salary range: $5,506 - $7,399 per month). Must possess knowledge of forest engineering theory, policy, principles, and practices applied to the Northwestern United States, experience with timber sales road plan preparation and administration, and familiarity with current forest practice rules, plans, forestry laws, and associated agency policies and WACs.

- Ability to navigate in the field using maps, a compass, and orthophotos.
- Ability to write professional correspondence and technical documents.
- Familiarity with current software used in word processing, spreadsheets, and forestry applications.
