As a Hospital Based Bilingual Patient Advocate
, you play a vital role in guiding uninsured hospital patients through the complex landscape of medical and disability assistance. This onsite, hospital‑based role places you at the heart of patient financial advocacy—meeting individuals face‑to‑face, right in their hospital rooms, to guide them through the process of identifying eligibility and applying for financial assistance. Your presence and empathy make a real difference during some of life’s most vulnerable moments.
The purpose of this position is to connect uninsured hospital patients to programs that will cover their medical expenses. As a Patient Advocate, you will play a critical role in assisting uninsured hospital patients by evaluating their eligibility for various federal, state, and county medical or disability assistance programs through bedside visits and in‑person interactions. Your primary objective will be to guide patients face‑to‑face through the application process, ensuring thorough completion and follow‑up.
This role is crucial in ensuring that uninsured patients are promptly identified and assisted, with the goal of meeting our benchmark that 98% of patients are screened position is responsible for working as the liaison between the patient in need, the hospital facility and government agencies, and for proficiently and effectively communicating in English and Spanish.
- Screen uninsured hospital patients at bedside to determine if they are viable candidates for federal, state, and/or county medical or disability assistance.
- Complete the appropriate applications and follow through until approved.
- Detail, accurately and timely document all cases in both MPower and the hospital systems.
- Provide exceptional customer service at all times.
- Participate in ongoing trainings to apply the content learned in dealings with patients and cases.
- Maintain assigned work queue of patient accounts.
- Collaborate in person and through verbal/written correspondence with hospital staff, case managers, social workers, and financial counselors.
- Answer incoming telephone calls, make outbound calls, and track all paperwork necessary to submit enrollment and renewal for prospective Medicaid patients.
- Maintain structured and timely contact with the applicant and responsible government agency, by phone whenever possible or as structured via the daily work queue.
- Assist the applicant with gathering any additional reports or records, meeting appointment dates and times, and arrange transportation if warranted.
- Request home visits as needed to acquire documentation.
- Inform the client in a timely manner of all approvals and denials of coverage as per established protocols.
- Attend ongoing required training to remain informed about current rules and regulations related to governmental programs, and apply updated knowledge when working with patients and cases.
- Ensure regular and timely attendance.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED preferred, except when required by our client.
- Prior hospital experience preferred.
- Adaptability when dealing with constantly changing processes, computer systems and government programs.
- Professional experience working with state and federal programs.
- Critical thinking skills.
- Ability to maneuver throughout the hospital and patients’ rooms during the scheduled shift.
- Proficient experience utilizing Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis on Excel and Outlook.
