To perform skilled mechanical work and semi‑skilled electrical work in the maintenance, repair, operation and upkeep of water and wastewater treatment plants and related equipment.

This entry‑level class in the plant mechanic series focuses on skilled mechanical repairs to water and wastewater equipment and routine electrical work, without lead responsibility for the work of others.

Receives general supervision from upper‑level staff.

• Operate and maintain city water and wastewater plants, including lift stations, pump stations, storm‑drain pumping stations, water towers and related facilities.
• Maintain a regular inspection schedule of equipment, machinery and facilities; troubleshoot electrical and mechanical aspects.
• Perform general electrical and complex mechanical maintenance and repair tasks on pumps, motors, drive systems and chemical feeders.
• Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, bulldozers and city vehicles.
• Use manual tools and light electrical equipment (welders, electric meters, torches, air compressors) for construction, repair and maintenance.
• Lubricate and pack pumps; replace worn parts; troubleshoot pumping machinery.
• Clean and check valves, bubbling lines, regulators, compressors and filters; replace bearings, shelves, seals and belts.
• Test and maintain generators for efficient operation.
• Perform preventive maintenance tasks on pumping and electrical equipment.
• Assist in design and fabrication of tools, pumps, valves and piping systems.
• Maintain accurate records and logs of operating conditions.
• Travel between city facilities for inspections, repairs and other assignments.
• Collect samples for testing; perform carpentry and painting duties; maintain and service tools and equipment.

• Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials and tools used in pump machinery maintenance and repair.
• Basic record‑keeping and report‑preparation techniques.
• Understanding of federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations.
• Knowledge of city and department policies and procedures.
• Safe and efficient work practices with electrical and mechanical equipment.
• Read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings and maps.
• Identify and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
• Follow oral and written directions.
• Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes and bulldozers.
• Operate motor vehicles.
• Operate light electrical equipment (welders, meters, torches, compressors).
• Maintain effective audio‑visual discrimination and mental capacity for problem identification and interpretation.
• Maintain physical fitness for walking, stooping, kneeling, standing, elevating heavy materials, climbing ladders and operating equipment.
• Handle personal danger, including hazardous chemicals, electrical hazards, confined spaces, high workplaces, loud noise, vibration.
• Effective communication and cooperative relationship building.

• One (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of mechanical and electrical machinery.
• High school diploma, GED, or completion of the twelfth grade.
• Additional specialized training in mechanics or a related field is desirable.
