Our client is seeking a dedicated Petroleum Geochemist to join their team in Port Elizabeth, focusing on the characterization of hydrocarbons and source rocks within the oil and gas industry. This role is essential for understanding petroleum systems, migration pathways, and reservoir quality. You will analyze geochemical data from various sources, including crude oils, natural gases, and rock samples, to provide critical insights for exploration and production strategies.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in organic geochemistry and its application to petroleum exploration, contributing vital scientific expertise to the company’s operations.
- Perform geochemical analyses on crude oils, natural gases, rock extracts, and source rocks.
- Interpret geochemical data to determine oil-source rock correlation, thermal maturity, and depositional environments.
- Develop and refine petroleum system models based on geochemical evidence.
- Assist exploration teams in identifying prospective basins and play concepts.
- Collaborate with geologists and reservoir engineers to integrate geochemical findings into field development plans.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in petroleum geochemistry and analytical techniques.
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in Geochemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in petroleum geochemistry, preferably within the oil and gas sector.
- Proficiency with analytical techniques such as GC-MS, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS), and Rock-Eval pyrolysis.
- Strong understanding of organic matter kinetics, diagenesis, and petroleum generation.
