The Senior Design Engineer is responsible for leading the design, development, and continuous improvement of Morbark equipment and systems. This role will lead engineering projects involving steel fabrication, weldments, diesel and gasoline engines, drive trains, hydraulics, and electronic controls across a broad range of equipment including tree care chippers, stump grinders, industrial chippers, horizontal and vertical grinders, flails, and sawmill equipment. The Senior Design Engineer will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, support cross-functional teams, and drive product innovation, manufacturability, quality improvements, and cost reduction initiatives.

This role requires strong engineering expertise, project management capabilities, and the ability to collaborate effectively with manufacturing, operations, sales, and service teams.

Essential Functions
  • Designs, develops, or modifies equipment, applying advanced engineering principles and industry best practices.
  • Analyzes data to determine feasibility of product proposals, design changes, and product improvement initiatives.
  • Analyzes product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs that can be produced by existing manufacturing methods.
  • Leads and coordinates prototype development, manufacturing support activities, and product validation processes.
  • Prevents or eliminates defects in new or existing products through root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provides technical support to sales, production, service, operations, and cross-functional teams to support business objectives and customer commitments.
  • Supports manufacturing and updates prints to provide configuration control of product as it is built.
  • Pursues individual goals and objectives while contributing to achievement of department goals and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintains records of engineering system changes, product updates, and revision controls as required.
  • Contributes to systems-related troubleshooting, engineering problem solving, and corrective action implementation.
  • Analyzes test data and reports to determine if designs meet functional, performance, safety, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Evaluates engineering test results and determines required design modifications or improvements.
  • Identifies cost saving opportunities related to product design, manufacturing efficiencies, and engineering processes.
  • Supports other groups and departments as needed while mentoring junior engineering team members.
  • Leads engineering projects from concept through implementation while managing timelines, priorities, and deliverables.
  • Provides technical guidance and mentorship to Design Engineers, Engineering Technicians, and cross-functional teams.
  • Participates in customer visits, field support activities, and product evaluations as required.
  • Supports continuous improvement, safety, quality, and operational excellence initiatives across the organization.
