The City of Port Huron is currently accepting applications for the following full‑time employment opportunity:
PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESTo provide the executive oversight involved in planning, developing, implementing and directing a comprehensive municipal Parks, Cemetery, Forestry, and Recreation program, as well as the McMorran Place Entertainment Complex; and to perform related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWork is performed under the general direction of the City Manager.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDSupervision is exercised over the Parks/Park Projects Supervisor, Cemetery & Forestry Supervisor, Recreation Supervisor, McMorran General Manager and a group of other full‑time, part‑time and seasonal employees engaged in operation and maintenance work.
TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK- Plan, develop, implement and direct a comprehensive Parks, Cemetery, Forestry and Recreation program, as well as the McMorran Place Entertainment Complex, including construction, operation and maintenance.
- Ensure compliance with policies and safety standards.
- Provide executive oversight for assigned departments and programs, ensuring alignment with City goals, budgetary guidelines, and strategic initiatives.
- Oversee budget preparation and fiscal management in designated areas.
- Make recommendations on equipment and capital improvements.
- Lead cross‑departmental projects and initiatives to improve service delivery, operational efficiency, and resident satisfaction.
- Monitor performance metrics and ensure accountability across departments.
- Recruit, hire, and motivate staff. Evaluate and monitor staff performance.
- Promote programs through public relations, community events, and partnerships with schools, nonprofits, and other agencies.
- Act as liaison between surrounding communities, agencies and community groups to align programs with community needs.
- Present official plans, policies and program updates to staff and the public.
- Respond to citizen inquiries and complaints.
- Perform related work as required.
- Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
- In-depth understanding of municipal operations, budgeting, personnel management, and public policy.
- Proven ability to build effective teams and foster collaboration.
- Strategic thinker with sound judgement and problem‑solving capabilities.
- Experience in project management and performance measurement.
- Ability to prepare, analyze and interpret oral and written reports, data and recommendations to support organizational goals and informed decision‑making.
- Ability to manage frequent interactions with the public in a professional, courteous, and customer‑focused manner.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with employees and community members to achieve shared objectives.
- Equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Political Science or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 7‑10 years of progressively responsible management experience in municipal government or public sector leadership, including supervisory experience.
$110,000 - $117,000 annually
