Position Description
This position serves as an overall supervisor the 1364 acre, 400 campsite South Higgins Lake State Park and area Boating Access Sites on Michigan’s largest inland lake, Houghton Lake. The purpose of this position is to provide high quality recreational opportunities to the public, while preserving and balancing the protection of the natural resources. Duties include directing daily program operations and implementing day-to-day objectives.
Monitors, evaluates, and addresses staff performance. Ensures compliance with administrative policies and procedures and expenditures are within the allotted budget. Directs, coordinates, and participates in the maintenance and/or construction of facilities. Builds and maintains relationships with other State of Michigan departments, DNR divisions, and external stakeholders including but not limited to Higgins Lake Foundation, Higgins Lake Property Owners Association, Gerrish Township Police/Fire, and Roscommon County Sheriff Department.
Position oversees enforcement and safety of entire work area.
Educational level typically acquired through completion of high school.
ExperienceFive years of park and recreation experience, including one year equivalent to a Park and Recreation Supervisor 10, two years equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger 9-, or three-years equivalent to a Park and Recreation Ranger E8.
AlternateEducation and Experience
Park And Recreation Supervisor 10-12
Completion of at least 8 semester or 12 term college credit hours in natural resources, park management, outdoor recreation, law enforcement/criminal justice, or environmental studies may be substituted for one year of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger‑E.
Completion of at least 15 semester or 22 term college credit hours in natural resources, park management, outdoor recreation, law enforcement/criminal justice, or environmental studies may be substituted for two years of experience as a Park and Recreation Ranger‑E.
Additional Requirements and InformationPossession of a valid Michigan driver’s license.
Some positions may require certification by the Department of Natural Resources’ Park and Recreation Enforcement Commission. Some positions within this class series are assigned job duties that may require possession of the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) issued by the Secretary of State as required by Public Act 346 of 1988 to operate a designated state vehicle.
