Purpose

This Natural Resource Management Assistant is an Ameri Corps position responsible for locating, downloading, gathering, and cataloging specimens and associated records from NPS projects permitted through the Research Permitting and Recording System (RPRS) into the Museum Collection Management System (MCMS). The role ensures accountability for natural history specimens removed from NPS property, provides essential data, field notes, maps, photographs, and reports to park managers, researchers, and visitors, and completes loan agreements with external repositories.

Description

of Duties
  • Identify and contact researchers who collected specimens at Isle Royale and Pictured Rocks systems.
  • Request submission of field notes, data, maps, photographs, GIS data, and natural history specimens.
  • Gather data on specimens still in researchers’ possession and coordinate with park staff to accession and catalog into MCMS.
  • Create loan agreements for collections retained at external institutions.
  • Update researcher tracking list to include all RPRS permits issued since 2022, and send follow‑up communications with approximately 100 researchers.
Deliverables
  • Update current researcher tracking list for ISRO and PIRO permits since 2022.
  • Contact approximately 100 researchers to locate specimens and data.
  • Accession and catalog entries in MCMS for at least 15 projects.
  • Qualifications
    • U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident.
    • High school diploma or equivalency, or enrollment in an eligible program with intention to obtain diploma before using education award.
    • Must complete National Service Criminal History Check and separate government security background check.
    • Availability for the full 12‑week term.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • Enthusiasm for science, data management, and museum collections.
    • Undergraduate degree in Social Sciences, Data Science, Natural Resources, Environmental Sciences, or Museum Studies (other degrees considered).
    • Experience with Excel and TMS Collections preferred.
    • Strong job ethic, attention to detail, oral and written communication skills, and positive attitude.
    Housing & Transportation

    Housing: No park housing available; applicant responsible for finding housing in nearby area. Options include subleasing rooms, houses, apartments, or dormitory‑style housing on Michigan Tech campus.
    Vehicle: Must have a valid driver’s license to operate a government vehicle; personal vehicle recommended.

    Time Requirements
    • Full‑time service each week; schedule may vary; lunch breaks and days off not counted.
    • May be required to participate in state, national, or local service projects.
    Orientation & Training
    • Receive project and site training from host site.
    • Orientation includes training on prohibited and unallowable activities.
    • Access to free professional development webinars.
    Evaluation and Reporting

    Performance evaluated on completion of minimum Ameri Corps hours, satisfaction of assignments, and meeting clearly communicated criteria. Reporting includes bi‑weekly timesheets, monthly accomplishment tracking, a mid‑term report, and a final report.
