STREETS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

To perform moderately difficult and responsible public works, construction and maintenance work involving the safe and efficient operation of various kinds of heavy and special automotive and power-driven equipment used by the Employer; to perform manual labor, miscellaneous maintenance, repair and construction work; and to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under the general supervision of a foreman or other designated official.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK

An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Operate light and heavy trucks, snow plows, tractors, salt trucks and other automotive and power-driven equipment.
  • Operate and assist in maintaining street sweeper.
  • Operate hyloader, roller, grinder, air compressors, concrete saw, asphalt paver, snow blower and other equipment as required.
  • Operate flusher truck.
  • Operate pneumatic tools and other hand operated power equipment.
  • Operate a tractor mower in cutting grass.
  • Set forms, pour and finish concrete, flat and street curb.
  • Assist in servicing and making minor repairs and adjustments to equipment.
  • Place, remove and maintain blinkers, barricades and other devices.
  • Install, repair and replace traffic, street and other signs.
  • Operate paint-spraying equipment.
  • Subject to general assignment and to inspection of work in progress and upon completion, with responsibility for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of equipment.
  • Manipulate controls to operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Change various attachments on equipment and make field adjustments.
  • Lubricate, fuel and clean equipment as required.
  • Participate in seal coating operations.
  • Perform manual labor, load and unload trucks, and perform related work.
  • Perform various public works maintenance tasks including wall washing, painting and repairing public buildings.
  • Perform related work as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
  • Knowledge of automotive and power-driven equipment lubrication and repair activities.
  • Familiarity with streets and principal locations in the city.
  • Ability to operate automotive equipment skillfully, safely and in accordance with rules and regulations.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of various types of heavy and special automotive and power-driven equipment used by the employer.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and practices involving the operation of all types of public works automotive equipment and tools.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to perform all types of concrete work including forming, pouring, finishing, flat and curb construction.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from an accredited high school.
  • Reasonable recent experience in the operation of various types of heavy automotive or special power-driven equipment, involving public works construction and maintenance or related activities.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver License (Operator’s) and a valid Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group A/Air.
WORKING HOURS

Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Ability and willingness to work overtime and callouts, as required

SALARY RANGE

$21.98 to $27.48 per hour

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions
  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 80 pounds
  • Ability to push, pull, grasp, reach, stoop and crouch with ease

  • Exposure to tar and asphalt chemicals
  • Ability to drive vehicles and/or heavy equipment, often in inclement weather, for long periods of time in a safe manner
  • Knowledge of St. Clair County roads desirable; ability to follow plowing routes
  • Ability to shovel snow for prolonged periods of time
