UTILITIES REPAIR Wastewater Treatment Plant GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled activities in the repair, maintenance or rebuilding of mechanical and electrical equipment; to perform related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Work is performed under the supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Supervisor I or the Water Filtration Plant (WFP) Supervisor I or other designated official.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK

An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (These examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Adjust, repair and replace parts in electric motors and motor starters.
  • Operate drill presses, grinders, pipe cutters and threaders, electric welding equipment, welding and cutting torches, and a variety of hand tools.
  • Operate lathe and Bridgeport to fabricate and/or repair needed parts and equipment within designated tolerances.
  • Perform routine electrical repairs.
  • Make repairs to blowers, sludge pumps, grit collectors, scum collectors, chemical feeders, and rotary screen thickeners.
  • Lubricate plant machinery, change oil and filters when necessary.
  • Remove, replace and clean large iron piping.
  • Use hoists and pulleys in moving and installing heavy equipment.
  • Disassemble and repair pumps, valves, compressors and other mechanical equipment.
  • Operate trucks and other mechanical equipment as required.
  • Disassemble and make repairs to hot water supply systems.
  • Paint wood, metal or masonry as required.
  • Repair cement work.
  • Clean and replace electrodes and probes.
  • Clean, unplug, repack and lubricate pumps.
  • Service remote pumping stations and generators.
  • Replace bushings and bearings on equipment and machinery.
  • Perform building and grounds maintenance work as required.
  • Prepare records and reports.
  • Perform inspections and calibrations on precision machinery using precision mechanical measurement devices.
  • Repair pneumatic operation cylinders and related control equipment.
  • Order parts and materials, as needed.
  • Perform related work as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS FOR EMPLOYMENT
  • Thorough knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and practices used in the repair and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of welding techniques; electric and gas, with the ability to fabricate as needed.
  • Demonstrate a thorough attainment of mechanical skills and aptitudes.
  • Physical agility; ability to climb ladders and enter confined spaces safely and with ease.
  • Ability to read and understand mechanical drawings and electric schematics.
  • Initiative and resourcefulness in solving mechanical problems and evaluating the performance of simple and complicated machinery.
  • Ability to prepare accurate records.
  • Knowledge of safety equipment and practices used when working with hazardous chemicals, gases, or wastewater constituents, including full-face respirators and hazardous gas detectors; ability and knowledge to implement local and MIOSHA safety requirements while working in enclosed spaces and with hazardous chemicals or gases.
  • State of Michigan Complete Treatment Certification, F3 or higher, for the Water Filtration Plant.
  • State of Michigan Municipal Operator Certification, Class D or higher, for the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Ability to work effectively with the public and other employees.

An employee in this class, upon appointment, shall have the equivalent of the following training and experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school.
  • Reasonable experience in work involving a wide variety of mechanical repair and maintenance activities.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver License (Operator’s) and a valid Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group A/Air for the Water Filtration Plant.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver License (Operator’s and a valid Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group A/Air with an “N” (Tanker) endorsement for the Wastewater Treatment Plant. Additionally, must be able to operate a 5 th wheel plate and manual transmission.
  • Formal and/or certified technical training in the following areas:
