This position works within the Roads Construction Management group of Public Works to oversee heavy civil roads capital construction projects. You'll perform highly technical office and field assignments in roadway infrastructure construction and inspection, working independently and collaboratively with project teams and stakeholders. Your work will be reviewed periodically through reports, conferences, and meetings, but you'll have autonomy to make critical decisions that keep projects on track.
The primary function of this position is to provide highly technical support for the Construction Manager and collaboration with the Construction Inspection Supervisor.
As an Assistant Construction Manager (Engineer
2), you'll have full project management responsibilities from day one with Construction Manager. You'll work in both office and field environments, gaining hands‑on experience that bridges design theory with construction reality. You'll also develop leadership skills by supervising inspection teams and collaborating with contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public on projects that shape the future of our community.
- Quality Assurance Leadership – Oversee construction activities and inspection staff to ensure projects meet contract plans, specifications, and regulatory requirements. Review daily reports, provide technical guidance, and resolve complex contractual issues.
- Contract Compliance – Ensure full compliance from contract award through project closeout, applying professional judgment to challenging situations.
- Project Financial Management – Independently manage construction budgets, review and approve contractor payments, and negotiate change orders.
- Project Coordination – Lead staffing decisions, coordinate utilities, and conduct pre‑construction and weekly progress meetings.
- Stakeholder Relations – Serve as the primary contact for contractors, utility companies, regulatory agencies, and the public. Review and respond to RFIs with professional engineering judgment.
- Public Relations – Partner with Public Outreach staff to communicate project impacts and respond to community questions with technical expertise.
- Bridge Inspection Oversight – Support the inspection program for in‑service bridges, including required reporting with assistance from the Capital Construction Inspector Supervisor.
- Staff Supervision – Directly supervise and mentor project inspection staff.
- Licensed as a WA State Professional Engineer (PE), or in process of securing WA State committee,
OR - Bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering or related field AND four years of related construction management/engineering experience under the direct supervision of a licensed PE,
OR - Engineer in Training (EIT) certification AND four y
