Purpose Statement: The job of Substitute Bus Monitor is to ride the bus with students of all ages, including those with severe physical and mental disabilities, while they are being transported to and from school. The monitor assists the bus driver by providing student supervision and assistance, reinforcing safe riding standards and appropriate conduct, ensuring disabled students are secured, fastening seat belts, and assisting in loading and unloading students.

The monitor must be able to exit a rear or side emergency door within 25 seconds without help and must be in a bus seat while the bus is in motion.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with safe transportation of students, ensuring correct seating, enforcing bus rules, and preparing students for learning.
  • Attend trainings for critical care of special education students.
  • Communicate with administrators, teachers, and parents regarding student behaviors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with district policies, federal and state laws.
  • Manage student behavior and report disciplinary concerns.
  • Monitor students, equipment, and materials for safety.
  • Participate in emergency evacuation drills and respond to emergencies.
  • Serve as a role model, demonstrating positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Supervise students while riding to ensure safety.
  • Understand student medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs.
  • Apply bus riding rules, regulations, and board policies.

Other Functions:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Skills:

communication with diverse groups, confidentiality, teamwork, operating in loud environments, and use of bus equipment.

Knowledge: basic math, following instructions, understanding child development stages and age‑appropriate communication.

Abilities: scheduling, data collation, operating equipment, problem‑solving, exiting emergency doors within 25 seconds, lifting, pushing, or pulling at least 25 pounds.

Responsibility: Work under supervision, provide information/advice, operate within budget, and impact organization’s services.

Work Environment: Lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; 80% sitting, 10% walking, 10% standing. Minimal temperature variations.

Experience: Job related experience is desired.

Education (Minimum): High school diploma or equivalent.

Certificates and Licenses:

  • CPR/First Aid Certificate
  • Safety Care de‑escalation and restraint training

Continuing Education/Training: Maintain certificates and/or licenses.

Clearances: Washington State Patrol and FBI Fingerprint.

Other Requirements:

  • Completed online application with supporting documents.
