The Substitute Bus Monitor rides the bus with students of all ages, including those with severe physical and mental disabilities, while they are being transported to and from school. The monitor assists the bus driver by providing student supervision and assistance, reinforces safe riding standards and appropriate conduct, and ensures all disabled students are secure in their seats and wheelchairs, fastening seat belts and safety devices.
The monitor also assists in loading and unloading students on and off the bus.
This role is distinguished by the requirement to exit an emergency door within 25 seconds without help in an emergency situation, and by the need to remain seated while the bus is in motion.
Essential Functions- Assist with transportation of students safely, ensuring correct seating and enforcing bus rules.
- Attend training for special procedures (e.g., suctioning, tracheotomy cleaning) to maintain proficiency in caring for special education students requiring critical care.
- Communicate with administrators, teachers, and parents about student behaviors on the bus.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with district policies, federal and state laws, and regulations ensuring student privacy.
- Manage student behavior and report disciplinary concerns to appropriate administrators.
- Monitor students, equipment, and materials for safety.
- Participate in mandatory school bus emergency evacuation drills.
- Respond to emergency situations such as injured students or fights.
- Serve as a role model, demonstrating a positive attitude and professional work ethic toward students, staff, parents, and agencies.
- Supervise students on the bus to ensure safety.
- Understand students’ medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs for a safe bus environment.
- Uphold and apply bus riding rules, regulations, and board policies.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support efficient unit functioning.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Skills: Communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team on the school bus; working in a potentially loud environment.
Knowledge: Basic math; reading and following instructions; understanding written and oral instructions; stages of child development and age‑appropriate communication methods.
Abilities: Scheduling activities; collating data; using job‑related equipment; flexibility to work with others; operating equipment with standardized methods; exiting an emergency bus door within 25 seconds without help; lifting, pushing, or pulling at least 25 pounds.
Responsibility: Working with immediate supervision; providing information and/or advising others; operating within a defined budget; utilizing resources from other units as required.
Work Environment: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; 80% sitting, 10% walking, 10% standing. Minimal temperature variations.
