PARA EDUCATOR – 1:1 FUNCTIONAL ADAPTIVE

Salary: $27.36 to $30.91 per hour (Schedule A‑Sup/Inst., IV)
Purpose StatementThe Para educator (Functional Adaptive) provides support to the instructional program in the assigned classroom. Responsibilities include supervising, caring, and instructing special needs students in general and self‑contained classrooms; implementing instructional plans; monitoring behavior; providing information to school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.
Essential Functions- Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support classroom objectives.
- Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance (diapering, tube feeding, colostomy care) as instructed by a health care professional.
- Assist students, teachers, and certified personnel with instruction and IEP implementation.
- Attend meetings and trainings (first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de‑escalation) to acquire or convey job‑related information.
- Develop and deliver instructional activities (academic, daily living, physical, communication, behavior/social skills) under teacher supervision to evaluate student progress on IEP objectives.
- Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA, FERPA, and IEP guidelines.
- Maintain instructional materials and electronic records to ensure availability and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitor students during assigned periods in various school environments to maintain a safe positive learning environment.
- Observe and record data to support progress of individual student goals and objectives.
- Provide clerical and general classroom assistance (data entry, correspondence, copying, filing, organization) to document student progress and support classroom activities.
- Supervise students in school setting to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Work under direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned; may be assigned to a student as a 1:1 para educator to ensure effective functioning of the unit.
Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Adherence to safety practices and operation of standard office equipment.
- Preparation and maintenance of accurate records.
- Basic math, written procedures, routine document creation, clear communication.
- Instructional procedures, age‑appropriate student activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, child development stages, and de‑escalation strategies.
- Scheduling activities and events, gathering and collating data, using job‑related equipment, and working flexibly with diverse groups.
- Problem‑solving skills to identify issues and select action plans; follow prescribed guidelines.
- Adaptation to changing work priorities, team collaboration, confidentiality, and operation amidst interruptions.
Experience
Job‑related experience is desired.
Education (Minimum)
At least 18 years old with a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must also meet one of the following:
- Passing score on the Para Pro assessment.
- Associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
- 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited institution.
Required Testing
Job‑Related Skills Proficiency Test.
Certificates and Licenses
- CPR/First Aid Certificate
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License & evidence of insurability
- De‑Escalation and Restraint Training
Continuing Education / Training
Maintain certificates and/or licenses.
Clearances
Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background clearance.
Other Requirements
- Completed online application with supporting documents.
